Angry Birds Creator Making Moves

Rovio Entertainment, the Finnish creator of the mobile sensation Angry Birds has received an absurd amount of profit from a game that cost as much to produce as the things in my pockets.

Okay maybe that’s an exaggeration, but would it make you lean your head back in your seat if I told you that Rovio Entertainment has grossed $1.2 billion off of Angry Birds? It definitely made me.

Now Rovio Entertainment is interested in taking its profits and expanding both its company and brand. The Finland-based game maker is considering taking a strategic investment from a company in the entertainment business. The company cannot be named due to the talks still being private, but Rovio plans to make an Angry Birds movie and open up offices outside of Finland.

Rovio is also interested in capitalizing on the popularity of Angry Birds in countries such as China and aims to sell stuffed animals and clothing in 200 retail stores.

Out of all the prospected investors in Rovio, the most likely candidates include game developers Electronic Arts, Zynga Inc., News Corp., and even Walt Disney Co. These projections come from Michael Pachter, managing director of research at Wedbush Sucurities Inc.    

“I can see how Disney would take ‘Angry Birds’ and turn them into a theme-park ride and a movie,” said Pachter. “Zynga could take ‘Angry Birds’ and make it into ‘FarmVille.’”

In the end, it’s a little scary how a small company can make one highly successful mobile game and just explode financially…in a good way. With $1.2 billion dollars I’m interested to see what they do with it.
