W.o.W. = World of Warplanes Now
Steven Granieri posted this item on Aug 10, 2011

If you have been living under rock, or should I say tank, then you might not be aware of Wargaming.net, or the immense amount of success they have received in the gaming world as of late.

They took a daring risk and plunged straight into the MMO world in a rather unconventional way with their hit World of Tanks. Apparently massively multiplayer tank warfare was in camouflaged demand with no supply until Wargaming.net provided people around the world a free-to-play, client based tank combat simulation where you gain experience and gold to purchase anything from tank upgrades, to even recruiting new military personnel.

I was able to spend some time reviewing World of Tanks, and although the presentation and everything was great, the main gripe I had with the game lied within the concept of the game itself. Now, it may be person preference, but I have never really been much of a tank enthusiast; I just felt like they were a bit too sluggish. I’m used to playing FPS games on foot that tend to be a little faster paced. On top of that, if I’m in a vehicle, I naturally want to feel like I’m moving faster than if I’m on foot, and World of Tanks was all about lethargic, pensive gameplay, that relied more on strategy than reaction.

With this said, World of Tanks has been immensely popular all around the globe, predominantly in Europe, and Wargaming.net has profited enough to bring you a new exciting game that might appeal to a different flavor of jarheads. Wargaming.net is bringing you World of Warplanes now, and I’m actually really excited for this; I’ve always favored planes over tanks any day.

World of Warplanes will feature gold, credits, and experience, just as World of Tanks did, and you will be able to purchase new planes, and advancements for those planes, as you would come to expect from Wargaming.net.

The cool thing they’re doing is featuring global interaction between World of Warplanes and World of Tanks, so you can share gold, and experience between the two games. This way all of those players who have put the time into World of Tanks can transfer some of their assets to World of Warplanes for a boost, and vice versa.

Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi. States, "We've got thousands of players on World of Tanks servers, who have gained a scarily large amount of free experience which they don't know how to spend. With this sharing option we say to them - hey, here's our new game, and it's as brutal and addictive as World of Tanks."

World of Warplanes will be set in the Golden Age of military aviation and will allow players to build full-scale careers as virtual pilots. Players will be able to fly planes from several key eras, starting from the 1930’s with biplanes and up to the Korean War jet fighters that led the way to modern air forces.

Like World of Tanks, there will be three different archetypes for you to choose from. There will be single engine light fighters capable of engaging enemies in close dogfights, heavy fighters with deadly destruction from head on, and even strafing aircrafts, which pose a threat to ground targets.

You can expect each plane to feature several variations in terms of ammo types, engines, and other crucial modules. In Wargaming.net fashion, you will be encouraged to test out different configurations to figure out which setup precisely models your play style.

As of right now, World of Warplanes has yet to go into its initial stage of testing, but as soon as it does, Wargaming.net will update the World of Warplanes site with some community features.

“We are thrilled with the launch of a website for World of Warplanes,” said Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi. “We'll be gradually expanding and developing the website along with the growth of the game and its community.”

We’ll be keeping an eye out for this one, and letting you know when you can expect to preform your best rendition of Top Gun in the future. Until then, you can always take a shot at World of Tanks if keeping your treads on the ground is more of your style.
