Ragnarok Violet

Ragnarok Online has been a highly successful freeware MMO for quite some time now, but Gravity Interactive isn’t content on stopping there.

Starting August 5^th, Ragnarok Online will be taken offline for a single-player experience on iPhone dubbed Ragnarok Violet. The game, like its online counterpart, will be offered for free, you will be able to find it on the Apple App Store.

Now, Maplestory has tried something similar to this recently and it didn’t exactly work out. I think the most important aspect that makes these RPG’s with outdated visuals tolerable is the fact that you get to play online with other players. Watering down the experience to single-player for a mobile device seems to really cool the steam, but keeping in mind the fact that Violet will be free, what do you really have to lose? I might just be a little apprehensive to merit this announcement due to poor mobile ports of freeware MMO’s that have come before Violet.

One thing I really have to mention is the spell animations in Violet look great, and aside from the drawback that it’s just single-player, the game actually looks pretty engaging for a free cell phone game. I’ve never really made it too far into a mobile RPG, but Ragnarok Violet looks like the type of RPG that you can just chip away at on those bus rides.

Come August 5^th I don’t think it would be too bad an idea to give this one a download to see what they’ve done with Violet.
