Free MMORPG’s are becoming
more and more popular among internet gamers. RuneScape by Jadex ltd. has been
around for a few years now and has reached over a million registered users this
past year.
RuneScape is a browser-based MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online
Role Playing Game). In simple terms: the game is not bought or downloaded, but
instead runs off our website, through a popular program called JAVA. In RuneScape, as many as two thousand people
can play on a single server at any one time. This is significant because some
games include only a few hundred users per server.
“In RuneScape, after designing your character by choosing its physical
attributes and base clothing, you enter a ‘tutorial island’ where you are
introduced to the basic features of the game – talking to computer controlled
characters (NPCs or Non Player Characters), fishing, mining and woodcutting.
After this, you are sent into the actual game environment, where you then have
a whole world to explore.”
Runescape is both F2P (free to play) and P2P (pay to play) while
the free world is very entertaining, the “members” (P2P) world is much more
rewarding. The world of RuneScape is extremely large compared to some MMORPG’s.
Offering more places to travel, thus more gameplay.
RuneScape has a very realistic economy; players can buy and sell
items from shops or trade with one another and even dictate their own prices.
Because so many people play, market prices fluctuate day to day
similar to real life. More experienced players can use this to get rich because
they will buy goods cheap and sell them high.
The fluctuating economy makes RuneScape much more fun to play
because of how realistic it is. RuneScape is a “skill based” game.
Most of the game is based
off of training skills to become a higher level. “A higher skill level unlocks
new items and abilities that can be utilized to better effect. It also gives
the player a higher overall rating, which is visible to other players and shows
their experience.”
While playing for free is both challenging and fun, paying for a
membership will offer you many more skills and possibilities:
- Skills like: Slayer
and Herb lore
- Thousands of
Monsters
- Hundreds of members
only quests
- Thousands of
members only items
Runescape offers a wide variety of quests and mini-games to keep
players interested. Games like: “castle wars” and “barrows” allow you to play
with your friends and earn new special items.
But one of the most interesting parts of the game is the “pking”
system. “pking” or “player killing” is an extra part of runescape. Some
MMORPG’s are based off of killing other players, in runescape it is only done
in one specific area to protect players who don’t wish to be attacked. If your
character travels into the “wild” you can attack other players. When you kill
another player in the wild you will receive their items which you can then use
for yourself, but be careful, you can be attacked by more than one player in
some spots.
If you’re interested in becoming rich, going on quests with your
friends or killing other players, runescape is the game for you.
