DYSTOPIA - Mod for Half-Life 2 »

Modding has become the new independent film - capturing the essence of gaming on the cheap.

Being able to avoid "sequel-it is" - bringing new ideas and new flare to the market. Still, the old adage that "there is nothing new under the sun" holds true in this great mod based off the CYBERPUNK gaming theme. With the Dystopia mod, a new generation of gamers can get the feel for ‘choomba’!

Dystopia takes the proven formula of running gun battles and team play and brings an immense level of improvement and polish to the game. As a result of the departure from the mundane and uninspired Dystopia provides as the ultimate amalgamation of tactical strategy and fast paced action oriented shooters. Gameplay, similar to CounterStrike, with two opposing teams each with their own separate goals and some awesome twists!

Players are given a choice at the start of each round between a light, medium, or heavy avatar, with individual abilities and weapons. Generally, each class differs in level of fire power, type/amount of upgrades, and physical properties (i.e. armor value/health). Light is given the most ability upgrades, but generally weak weapons and poor constitution. Medium is given fewer upgrades though more substantial weapons as well as a hardier constitution and serves as an intermediary between combat/ability efficiency. Naturally, Heavy is given the least upgrades but the strongest weapons and the best constitution. This adds a great deal of depth to game play and the teamwork element. Since every player is free to choose his avatar and upgrades, mixing and matching to see which furnishes better results is strategic and, most importantly, fun.

This might sound typical, even a bit Team Fortress like, no rule is set for the role efficiency of each class. The light class is generally accepted as the most efficient stealth operatives and not combatant, they could also prove useful in support roles or as assassins. The Heavy class, though slow and easy to notice, could perform covert operations since they have such a potent arsenal. Strategy is highly circumstantial and ever changing since every time you die you are given the option to change your class/abilities.
The game is not wholly revolutionary - but is has an excellent twist to the over-satured market of games competing with COUNTERSTRIKE and other traditional FPS. We are excited at tonight’s release of this large update to both the client and server. Stay tuned for some kick-a$$ fun and some servers provided by SpawnPoint for this newly updated mod!

Ever play Talsorian’s Cyberpunk RPG? If you were a serious table-based-RPG player, you either did - or at least have heard about it1 Dystopia places the player into tense combat situations in a high tech world spanned by computer networks. As either Punks or Corp Mercenaries the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace. Cyberspace is a three dimensional representation of the world's network. Inside cyberspace players will launch programs to hack into systems linked to the physical world, fight off enemy hackers or defend critical systems. Gameplay progresses through inter-linked physical and cyberspace objectives, some are completed in either the physical world or cyberspace, others only by a well timed combination of the two.

Whether the player is a heavily augmented combat mercenary armed to the teeth with the latest in firepower, or a twitch reflex cyberdecker racing to infiltrate a cyberspace node; they'll be immersed in an action packed battle. Only through skillful use of the high tech arsenal we're making available and intelligent team play will players truly jack-in and kick ass.

About the Dystopia Team: Dystopia is a total conversion for Half Life 2 currently under development by Team Dystopia. We are a collection of dedicated and talented gamers who are creating an action packed multiplayer game. Drawing on the themes and concepts of the Cyberpunk genre and implementing ideas born out of years of gaming experience with a diligently designed gameplay system, we hope to produce the next step in online multiplayer gaming.

What is Cyberpunk? Yanked straight from TALSORIAN Games website..

THE CORPORATIONS control the world from their skyscraper fortresses, enforcing their rule with armies of cyborg assassins. On the Street, Boostergangs roam a shattered urban wilderness, killing and looting. The rest of the world is a perpetual party, as fashion-model beautiful techies rub biosculpt jobs with battle-armored roadwarriors in the hottest clubs, sleaziest bars and meanest streets this side of the Postholocaust. The Future never looked so bad.

BUT YOU can change it. You've got interface plugs in your wrists, weapons in your arms, lasers in your eyes, bio-chip programs screaming in your brain. You're wired-in, Cyberenhanced and solid state as you take it to the fatal Edge where only the toughest and coolest can go. Because you're CYBERPUNK.

CYBERPUNK: The original roleplaying game of the dark future; a world of corporate assassins, heavy-metal heroes and brain-burning cyberhackers, packed with cutting-edge technology and intense urban action. In this game you'll find everything you need to tackle the mean streets of the 2000's - in a game system that combines the best in realistic action and playability.
