Default large handron super colider

time to fire it up

CERN Ready To Test Fire Its Time Machine On September 10 - Tom's Hardware

the energy of the collision is supposed to be equal to that of a black hole, though it will only last for fractions of nano seconds if that.

Should be interesting. The results should help us understand a lot about the universe, or at least confirm or disprove a lot of our ideas and theories.

my friends and i were betting on what would happen when we heard about it in school.

my guess was everybody would feel this huge jerk towards the LHC for a few second when the black hole formed.

sitting there having lunch and all of a sudden evrything shakes and you move about a foot to the right "dude, what the hell?"

my guess is the world will carry on just the way it was.
It normally does that no matter what you try

They wont be forming any black holes. At not least in the way you are thinking (primordial black holes).

Accepted particle physics suggests the energies involved at LHC are not high enough to even create a quantum mechanical black hole, aka mini black hole. But newer, less accepted extensions and changes to the standard model suggest that when you take into account additional spatial dimensions there may be enough energy to form a qm black hole after all. These would be extremely tiny and would last a tiny fraction of a second due to the release of Hawking radiation.

If such a black hole was created, you would be totally unaware of its existence as its gravitational pull would be minute compared to that of the earth.

Of course not everyone agrees with the view that it is unlikely a qm bh would be created and if so it would be extraordinarily brief. Some physicists do not subscribe to the hawking radiation theory and believe that stable qm bh could be created in LHC, and that they could pose a threat to earth as they would possibly be travelling very slowly (relative to the ones that are believed to be blasting through space [and occasionally earth] at close to the speed of light} If it was moving slowly enough the earths gravitational field could capture it. One or even a bunch of these tiny black holes would not be a problem, however it has been postulated that they might create one per second (so thats 3600 per hour, 86400 per day, over half a million in a week) which could prove troublesome if they were all buzzing around in our gravitational well.

The end of the world is nigh!!!!!!!!!!

Thumbs down

End of the world

well according to what i read in the daily mail which is arguably the best newspaper. The world shall end on wednesday in a disaster of biblical scale when the CERN is fired up.

but the question is "Will it"

Sorry Sulli But for the daily mail if it isnt British and already accepted for 30 years it will either turn the childeren into mindless raving lunatics, will cause the country to become overrun with asylum seekers, allow the entire of the EU parliament to watch us through the window or kill us all. Whilst I do agree with some of their standpoints on certain issues, and they have garfield, most of the stuff they print is just fear mongering.

I was all ready to make a factual scientific post like JK but I see hes already done it for me. And having just read the article in question it says at the end No, It wont kill us all.

Ah the established media, how I grow tiresome of thee.

And on the actual subject of whether we will actually die, I for one trust the opinion of Hawking over just about any other singular living scientist. Now since its Many vs Many, I tend to stick with the hawking camp. It would be like betting against einstein (And whilst some of his theorys may prove to be incorrect IE Dark matter/energy [cant remember offhand which one] cannot exist with black holes) its still not a smart bet.

Call it scientific fanboyism if you will. But that man has a brilliant mind.

Tell me that was a joke, please.

The trouble with reporting on the LHC is that it is a big story, so papers feel obliged to cover it and articles about Higgs Bosons can be a little dull and technical. I can almost imagine the conversation between Editor and journalist:

E - "Excellent article explaining the physics that the LHC hopes to probe and great detail about what a magnificent peice of engineering it is."
J - "Thanks boss, I put a lot of work into it."
E - "We can't publish it."
J - "....."
E - "Our readers are far too stupid and shallow to possibly be interested in, let alone comprehend one of the most important experiments ever conducted."
J - "But...."
E - "Instead, let's focus all our journalistic energy on what that crackpot from Hawaii said about it destroying the universe."
J - "sigh"

My favourite part of that article was this quote:

"The LHC was not designed to destroy the universe"

Laughed so hard at that. Hope that clears up any lingering doubts anyone had over the purpose of the LHC.

hell yes i was joking at that i just remembered that alan partridge's favourite newspaper was the daily mail so i thought i would slip that quote in.

Personally i dont think it will destroy the world considering that there have been proper scientists looking into the dangers and not some science editor from the daily mail.
i know it is a load of tripe but i just found it interesting when i read it and on topic so i thought you guys might like to read it and have your own opinion on what is happening.
