Alright, for your children, the best choice is the Wii. Though I would say the best gaming system is the PS3. It has the best specs and is even more powerful then my computer (granted that I don't have the best computer). Now I know it's expensive, but you can wait until the games actually come out for PS3 and then buy it cause there will be so many great games for it. Considering that Xbox with the HD attachment and PS3 cost the same plus PS3 gets free internet access as long as you have wireless I would say PS3 beats Xbox 360 right there. In just a few months you have so many great games coming out like Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Heavenly Sword (though not the most kid-friendly games, but they certainly are great most mature player games). Mr. Me don't tell me that you can beat any Final Fantasy (7 and up) in three days. That would be a amazing feat. Now PS3 is not kid-friendly so I still suggest a Wii like the rest, but if you want something to play and have 600 dollars to waste, please pick a PS3 over Xbox 360. Though Wii is kid-friendly, all is has to offer is a the Wiimote...they barely have changed the system at all except to add the little Wiimote. It's basically the same system with a different build and a little add-on. The only thing Nintendo has done great was make people forget that they barely changed the system and go crazy over the Wiimote. That is some good marketing skills, but not really game-making ability.

Why buy a Wii and a mod chip/emulator when a SNES is like 20 bucks :)
New systems are all sports games, racers, or shooters. They suck (Except midnight club dub edition for xbox, that was a good one...)
SNES has hundereds of great adventure games, some of my favorite console games of all time are on SNES
In no particular order:
Super Bomberman
Super Mario Allstars
Super Matio World
Yoshis Island
Plok (HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE EVER HEARD OF/PLAYED PLOK!)
Zombies ate my Neighbors
Tetris 2
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario Kart
Diddy Kongs quest (^^)
Zelda; A link to the past
The list goes on! None of the above games can be easily beaten less than a week which can't be said for 90% of modern games. Who can list that many awesome games friendly for all ages that won't get boring/beaten within the first week? Oh, and you can probably buy every one of those games for about 40 dollars total from a pawn shop.
Note for fer sher: I have over 10GB of emulators/roms for everything up to playstation. ^^ (3000+ MAME, 350+ SNES, 900+ NES, 600+ GB/C/A, 30+ N64....oh...and 1400 songs for StepMania :D)
Nice collection!
I still think modding for the SNES games etal, is better cause then you can get all teh new wii games also! :) not only that SNES is $20 but the games are sometimes hard to find, and sometimes not cheap! I tired to get SNES Dr. Mario for my dad for xmas a couple years back and it as still $50 new!!

Holy snap buckets batman! I'm just goin off what I see at pawn shops and garage sales and such. The classic titles (like super mario world) can be found dirt cheap because they made over 15.2 trillion of each game.

Hello guys,
I've got an XBox 360°,and the only thing i can say,IT ROCKZ!!!!:p
The graphics are fantastic, you can't compare with Css,but the control of the 2 joysticks at the same time is not as nice as at the pc...
i think you should know that, but if you got a child of 6 years old i would give him a Wii,thats the best 4 children i think :D
XBox 360° is 4 real gaming

Really, it all depends on how much you want to spend, and what exact game types you want (or don't want) your children to become involved in. There are plenty of games for all ages across all platforms. For younger kids who may want to have more physical involvement in gaming, I would suggest the Wii for the simple fact that they can throw themselves around a room to play it. (Maybe a plus for you as well if they get tired from it easy?)
A cheap, but gateway system into the larger world of gaming, including competitive gametypes, would probably be the N64 as it covers a large range of gametypes from FPS to RPG and everything in between. The games and system are inexpensive and for the most part simple enough for younger kids to pick up and increase their interest in gaming to later move on to bigger and badder things (such as the awesome Xbox 360). This was my first true system I became addicted to that moved me on farther into the gaming industry, and I began with it when I was about 8.
Anyways, hope everyone's opinion has been helpful and best of luck! I would suggest doing a little research on the games available for each system and anything in particular you want or don't want.
