Box for the kids
Posted: Jun 21, 2007, 17:42:47
I'm going to relent and get my kids a box at Christmas this year and so want to begin to research.
Who has what?
How much do you like it?
Do you have kids? If yes - do they play it?
If no kids... will a 6 year old find fun with it? I assume my 8 yr old will.

If you're looking for simple games, go with the Wii. They'll love it, and I bet you will too.
If you're trying to "break them in" to the whole gaming thing, I'd suggest the Xbox 360 because of the quality of games, graphics, and the option of Xbox Live.
Not crazy about the PS3 but others might give you some reasons to get it. From what I hear, it isn't worth the $700 or whatever it costs now.
Good luck!

When I can find one, I am going with the wii. The other platforms are not as kid friendly. My kids are 10,9,8,2,.5

I would also suggest the Wii. Nintendo has been my all time favorite growing up because it aims more towards children and god knows Im still a kid. I've had almost all the consoles and handhelds from them. Plus it gets your kids up and energy burning so they will crash into a good sleep at night. I also love the older games you can get on the wii by dling them. I think this would appeal more to your kids and the games are easy to follow. I'm not sure how many can play on the other consoles but wii has four remote slots so the whole family can play. Family Wii Nights!! whoo. Would not recommend xbox360 or the ps3, as they have more adult contents in it. I'm sure I'm repeating what ricrogue said but I like to repeat :)

I have a Wii and I highly recommend it. Although I'm not a mother, I've taught 2nd grade.... and a few other grades. ANYWAY, the point is, the Wii is definitely kid friendly. You won't have to worry about half naked demon goddesses (relating to a story about a game my sister got for her 13 yr old son just recently) and for the most part, you can decide what they play and with who. ALSO - as an added bonus, you can download a web browser (it's 5 bucks now but it was free for a long time) so you're kids can browse the web and such and you don't have to worry about them doing it in a dark secluded room. Makes it nice and easy for you to keep tabs of what they're doing.

I'd have to go ahead and recommend the Wii as well. While I've myself haven't been as satisfied with the last few Nintendo consoles since a vast majority of their games are directed at younger audiances this would be perfect for you. The new Wii mote thing is nice as well as since it is motion based atleast your kids aren't just sitting in front of the TV hitting buttons they are still moving around.
XBox 360 does have better specs and has been out longer so it has a decent game library as well however it is more geared to a older audiance. As far as the PS3 goes the games just aren't there as of yet.

COME ON, you all know X BOX rocks your SOX off!!!!!!
GTA 4 is coming out soon, boom magine ur 6 year old running around stealing cars and killing people, i think its a great way to bring him up, let him learn the streets and ways around it.
then halo will come out and he'll learn about competition and ranking systems and how to work as a team to defeat the enemies, even war strategies.
really, you should get one, buy some crappy games for them, like racing and stuff then play these ones on the side, trust me, you'll never have fun with wii yourself, get the box is the only way to go.
follow your instinct, don't trust the wii generation, they all waited in line for 5 hours to get theirs, obviously they're gonna say its the best out there, think about it.
do you want your kids playing a console not spelt properly
i wouldn't.
they're not gonna be kids forever you know.

The Nintendo Wii is the way to go for the kids. 60GB PS3 costs $599 not $700. If you add everything up with the Xbox 360 it costs the same as the PS3. Xbox 360 is $399, HD-DVD add on $200, and monthly fees for Xbox Live. Same price :), PS3 has new technology built in such as Cell processor, and Blu-Ray drive. I own a PS3, tried the X360 but it wasn't for me.

I threw my Wii remote at the ceiling fan the second day I had it and both are fine so I don't know what you mean "breakable". And I didn't wait in line at all for the thing. I went into Best Buy for a pc headset and they had 3 Wiis so my Dad decided to get one lol.

Lack of games? It's only been out since November and it's got plenty of games. I have about 8 games and if I had money to blow - I'd buy even more of them. Not to mention - I can play ALL of my gamecube games on the Wii AND there's a whole virtual console with tons of cheap games. I've bought about 10 virtual games as well and I enjoy them too.
Lack of games - ROFL. Right.
As for standing in line.... uh - I opened mine Christmas morning and there was NO standing in line for either me OR for my husband who bought it for me. And as an adult (29 yrs old...eek!) I love my Wii. My friends ALL play with me and they even come over sometimes just so they can play. Who says there has to be blood and guts for the game to be fun?

I'll hopefully get around to getting a Wii soon...but I think I'll put the money into a bigger TV first so I can really enjoy it.
as for the PS3...I still can't figure out why anyone would want that. if I was given one for free I wouldn't even bother opening it, I'd just put it up on ebay and take whatever I could get for it (and use the money to buy a Wii and a bunch of games :D )

my kids:
7 yr old boy
3 yr old boy
1 yr old girl
I bought an xbox about 2 years ago, and promptly modded it. it has a 300gig HD in it, and about 50 games. it is networked to my PC, where i store all my movies (many of them childrens movies) and then can be watched on the 42" plasma, through the xbox media center.
there are MANY good games for little ones on the xbox... just gotta look.
I just got wii one week ago, and modded it last night. so far so good... more of a family system, at least to start, but keep in mind that all those same games that you would not want your kids playing are available on the wii.
I like the wii its small, smart, sleek, wireless network.. just a much better design than MS's hulking fugly xbox :D

Go classic. Buy a Super Nintendo. Massive selection of games floating around, you can find systems for 20 bucks, games for as low as a dollar. SNES games are generally very long and hard, in a fun way. Examples;
Zelda took me 8 months, Zombies ate my neighbors I never beat, Tetris 2 in Puzzle Mode took several months and the whole family got into it...hell, even the classic Super Mario Bros can take months the first time around.
Sure there is no online mode, but who wants thier >10yr olds playing online? I would rather play Super bomberman with friends than play CS:S on an xBox Live network.
Everything after N64 sucks in my opinion. Games can be beaten in like 3 days because the ammount of memory those pretty graphics take up doesn't leave much room for levels.
A level in Super Mario is pretty much a uber-wide picture...no crazy polygons with 1024x1024 double-cell shaded pixels with a trilinear ZBuffer XJblocking system...taking up 5 megs when all it is in the game is a fricken boulder. No joke...one player model in CS:S takes the same ammount of memory as an entire level in Super Mario.
SNES is the most kid-friendly system out there in my opinion. Great graphics (great as in smooth with nice bright color), 0 loading time, virtually indestructable game cartridges (1 scratch can ruin a 50 dollar xbox game). Not to mention there are probably over 500 different great games out there, none of which would cost more than 10 dollars. Swing by a pawn shop and take a look.
If you have your heart set on getting a new system, go for the Wii. It is cheaper than the other super-systems, and great for all ages.

I agree the classics are great... but dude, get a modded machine (xbox or wii) and play all / any NES SNES GCUBE even ARchade games in existence.
I have thousands.

I love that Me-Deuce dropped SNES on the discussion. I finally moved my crap out of my parents house last year and brought the old SNES with me. My wife LOVES it, although for some reason it will only play super mario bros. . I would stay away from playstation. I tried to find 2 player games for my PS2 for my wife and I to play and they don't exist, except for shooters, sports and racing games.

Why buy a Wii and a mod chip/emulator when a SNES is like 20 bucks :)
New systems are all sports games, racers, or shooters. They suck (Except midnight club dub edition for xbox, that was a good one...)
SNES has hundereds of great adventure games, some of my favorite console games of all time are on SNES
In no particular order:
Super Bomberman
Super Mario Allstars
Super Matio World
Yoshis Island
Plok (HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE EVER HEARD OF/PLAYED PLOK!)
Zombies ate my Neighbors
Tetris 2
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario Kart
Diddy Kongs quest (^^)
Zelda; A link to the past
The list goes on! None of the above games can be easily beaten less than a week which can't be said for 90% of modern games. Who can list that many awesome games friendly for all ages that won't get boring/beaten within the first week? Oh, and you can probably buy every one of those games for about 40 dollars total from a pawn shop.
Note for fer sher: I have over 10GB of emulators/roms for everything up to playstation. ^^ (3000+ MAME, 350+ SNES, 900+ NES, 600+ GB/C/A, 30+ N64....oh...and 1400 songs for StepMania :D)
