CS 1.6 refuses to work

Every time I try to load 1.6 I get the same problem. I get the background when I load, but no text. I see no "New Game" "Find Servers" ect. anywhere. I can move my mouse over the links and they make a click, and when I click the bottom one (Exit) and hit enter the game exits...so I know they still work...I just don't see them.

When I try to hit my Console key, I don't see a console. I do however see the little text cursor pop up, and commands still work (for ex. 'Quit')

If I try to connect to a server from my Desktop, the same thing happens. It will load me up, I'll actually get into a server and be able to walk around and shoot...but still, all I can see is that stupid guy with a glock in the main screen. As if the image has been burned into my screen permanently.


I have reinstalled the game twice, no luck. Closed and restarted steam, again, nothing. Deleted all the DLL's and most of the files that are related to 1.6 and restarted steam to let new ones download, STILL...nothing works.

Try using a different log in for steam.
most likely though it has to do with YOUR computer so maybe you should reformat and try it again.

Man...I really don't wana have to back up nearly 300 gigs just to play cs 1.6...

Any other way?

could be a driver issue. try either updating or rolling back your video and sound drivers. I went nuts once trying to figure out a major video glitch that turned out to be a problem with my sound driver. my soundcard was going so ape over whatever it was that it was screwing with everything.

Another factor that is commonly overlooked is DirectX. Sometimes re-installing DirectX can fix a host of video related problems.

very true...never know when a MS product is going to crap out for no reason and need to be reinstalled (glares and growls at the old Win98 and pre-service pack 1 XP CDs gathering dust in the corner)

haha yeah, 98 and pre sp1xp are horrible for that. And of course 400x worse than them is WinME.
