In game ads

Could spawnpoint modify the maps they have to include ingame ads? They would have to be discrete (on assault: ct spawn, t stairs, hostie room) but players could look at them while they are dead. They wouldn't be able to click, but maybe someone would be willing to pay enough for the ads to get the domestic servers up to 100 tic? I realize having to DL the maps would be a pain, but people would probably endure it for nicer servers with better registration.

I thought of this because someone sprayed a banner for a concert and I thought little sprays like that might be attractive to someone like netflicks or other game rental companies.

they might not have to download anything cuz you could modify one certain file on the server itself so the players can see it without downloading a single thing.

CS_Assault Glitch Fixing
I was bored today, and pi**ed at glitchers so I started poking around with entspy and hammer.
I noticed that you could place new serverside ents with entspy, because when a client connects to a server, it sends all the point ent data to them.

So I placed some invisible prop_dynamic blast doors to make it impossible to access those glitch areas (Like the roof next to CT Spawn)
I then saved the bsp, tested it and laughed as my friends went splat when they were trying to get onto the roof and such.

tl;dr fixed the glitches by placing invisble props to block them and preserved the map checksum so that only the server requires the new bsp

actually dwinx you dont have to dl anything. it is just like a spray. There is a mani command to place banners of ads and so forth on walls.

Even better. Why doesn't SP do this? It would be nice if they put the cash back into the servers...ads=$=better servers=more players=more $, but it seems silly to not have them even if the guys at the top want to pocket it.

there is one server in 1.6 that is by spawnpoint and it has ads in the map dust2 it had a big tv that said visit spawnpoint.com or something ghost was there for that one so he can confirm i wasn't dreaming it.

That would be a great idea. D2 is a good map for ads because they could be placed without being too distracting. A banner on the sides of the tunnel as you rush B or A (from T or CT) would be very visible, but not detracting from gameplay.

A spawnpoint banner might draw a few people to the site, but an ad for a product would be more lucrative, I imagine.

It might surprise you to know that SPAWNPOINT's owners - PHXX.com - was the FIRST EVER to launch in-game ads in CS/CSS.

Further - we didn't use VALVES code. We had our own. Sadly, we got the big o' cease-and-desist from Valve for doing so.

If you recall the SUBWAY fiasco of 2 years ago.. that was us. We were paying for ALL Servers AND growing the network until Valve said we were not allowed to make money with their game.

So they off and did it on their own with our own marketing partner, IGA.

hahah weaver i dont disagree. I just hate that valve did that crap. they added ad's they dont have a legitment reason why. there not paying for the server are they? Consumers are paying for the game. And server providers (spawnpoint for example) is paying for servers not valve...
