Yes it happens, sometimes it just freezes. Close the command prompt and start over again from where you open it. You don't have to re dl the hlds update tool.

:confused1: I'm new to this and I'm in a learning process, first question I have for you. That is in this command line can you change the name to a different game such as call of duty 4? And is this how you do it?

hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir C:\srcds

hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Call-Of-Duty-4" -dir C:\srcds

and when you do this command sequence does it download the games and then all you have to do is put the configurations into the server? Or do you need to buy software to do this? Thank you for your help.

You cant do that as Call of Duty 4 isnt a source engine game.

So like I said I'm learning. Telling me call of duty 4 is the source engine game doesn't tell me much. Do you have to buy some kind of software? Said thing with call of duty world at war. I mean this is my first time trying to think about setting up a game server. I was hoping that I would get the answers that I need here. Thank you very much for all your help Marty.

hey all,

i've installed the server and its up and running... i've attached an image that shows the results.

server isn't my problem (i think), my problem is much more primitive. it's actually a newbie question. HOW DO I CONNECT TO THIS SERVER TO PLAY THE GAME??? :s

- what version of counter strike source do i have to install in order to test/play it ?
- i've counter-strike source 1.19, but when i try connecting to the server it gives me some error:your version does not match server version. Please restart game... i removed the map in question so the server can update it but no change.
-BTW, i downloaded my version of CS-S from rapidshare. it didn't require any activation or anything...
- can i use a cracked version on this server? if so which version and where can i download it?

please guys... help me... i've been tryin to do this for ages...

any help is greatly appreciated...

Hi Im trying to build a Home server that can host as many Gaming server's, Voice servers and websites/web space as possible.
I plan on building the server running threw Windows xp professional 64bit. Now I was wondering with the below specs about how many Gaming server's/voice servers I can run..
and whether the server would be stable or worth building with such specs in one system.

MOTHER BOARD:
ASUS Z8PE-D18(ASMB4-IKVM) Dual LGA 1366 Intel 5520 SSI EEB 3.61 Dual Intel Xeon 5500 series Server Motherboard

CPU (I have two CPU's supported):
2 x Intel Xeon E5530 Nehalem 2.4GHz Quad-core Server CPU. (L2 cache 4 x 256kb, L3 cache 8 MB)

RAM (totals out to 72GB's within 18 slots):
6 x Patriot Signature 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Server Memory

Hard Drive (got 4 totaling out to 3150 GB's):
1x Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000 Rpm's (Installing OS on this)
3x Western Digital Caviar 1TB 7200 RPM's

Power Supply (750w):
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Retail

I also have a good Server rack case and decent sound card and cd/dvd drive esc. Looking into Power supply Backup as well.

Plan on running this on Verison Fios's best connection for now.

Also so you know this server will be running Gaming server's for Counter-strike source, Call of duty 4 ,
Modern warfare 2 (soon to be) and some others but mostly those. As well as Ventrilo's (voice server's) and website's.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. I'll be spending a lot of cash out of my wallet for this. Thank you.

Sorry guys, i haven't received any emails saying that people replied to my thread.

xripson What you need to do is run the hldsupdate tool again in the same location for the game. The auto update only works for Linux OS and not windows. You would need to re follow the steps that you did on installing a new server. But instead of installing a new one. it will check for the game version and update upon it.

KlNG you cannot use a computer to create a ps2 server. The PlayStation use PlayStation network which connects to their own locations. Some servers people can host but it would be off of the ps2 and you would need it on. Best thing i recommend is getting a Xbox360. It has the best online multilayer interface. It is also more secure and reliable since you are paying for it. I have a PS3 and 360. I use my PS3 for blu-ray and single player games such as prototype. For the 360 i use it for Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, because of the fact that it is easier and you get a better game play out of it when playing online.

UPDATE TO STEPS!! 12/05/07 12:06PM EST

PEOPLE WITH ROUTERS
if you are using a router you must forward your game port. if you do not know how to forward ports please go to the port forwarding site.
they have a complete list of routers so you can find your router and open the ports that you need. the default game port is 27015. once your ports are open you can go to whatsmyip.org and get your external ip from there. people can only connect on your external IP if they are not connected to your router.

PEOPLE WITHOUT ROUTERS
if you do not have a router, you should still go to whatsmyip.org and find your external ip so you can give it to people. you would know if you do not have a router if you only have 1 computer in your house.

Did you forward your ports :smile
