Hmmm, Im getting in about 70 (3 year old) pcs. My uncle works in a tech school and they are upgrading all of thier computers. So I picked up a pallet load of them for about $400 ( i could get that from another school for like $100, but these were TOP OF THE LINE. They even have Adobe Suite) and i might just run servers and rent out the servers. Just gotta get more bandwith. First off it to calculate howmuch income i will get comparded to the monthly charge on the internet.

The OS doesn't matter that much, because if worse comes to worst, you could always install linux. Also, is there anyway to install counter strike w/o the default maps? I'm going to use my laptop as a gungame server I think, and these map downloads take forever.

I really think you should consider heat also. I had a friend who designed server rooms, and the air conditioning was a huge factor, so ventilation is must. In the winter you'll have to open windows it'll be so hot.

the only way you can get a game server without default maps is if I make a download for you. It is mandatory to download the maps for a server because it is a valve / steam thing. also tell us the specs on those computers i could use some of those since i stopped using my local servers i have free bandwidth to use.

I think it would be easier to just remove the default maps from the rotation....

That is what I did for my GG server. And if you don't want them available at all just remove them from the list of maps available. I do not see the harm in their existence on your PC...you could delete them...

Anyway Whyy I want to know WHY??? does my server keep using a port outside the range of standard ports? The effect is that no one can join my server. I can join...but from the LAN.

The port it uses seems to be random and is different each time the server is started. I want it to be 27015 but it is usually something in the range 54000 to 57000.

to me it is not possible for the ports to be outside of the 270** areas. maybe that is something else. also did you set the port in your command so that it stays it is that specific port? usually when the game server starts up in console mode it will show you a master ip and port, that is usually communicating with steam.

Alright, I don't know if anybody is still monitoring this thread, seeing that it's been almost 2 months since the last reply. I used Whyy's guide, and it worked great! Just a few questions...

Only some of my friends are able to connect, and they can only do it when I give them my server's IP. My server does not show up on the master list. Why is that?

Other than that, I am very impressed with this guide, it worked perfectly, minus the two issues I've noted above. Does it have anything to do with licensing?

I'll post my Speedtest and specs later, as well as the .cfg, if that's necessary.

P.S. I'm running TF2
