Hi all,
It's OPREP with some more noob admin questions. 1. What is spamming the server and what does it do for the player (if any)? How do I know it is happening and can I do anything about it? 2. I've noticed other servers state do not change command rate. How is that done and what does that do for the player? How do I know it is happening and can I do anything about it? Your unworthy noob admin, OPREP 3 White Pinnacle |

I can only help you with the first question. Spamming the server means typing senseless crap over and over just to be annoying. I know what you are talking about on the second question but I couldn't really tell you a way to notice it happening. Hope I was of some help.

Appreciate the information. When I am playing or spectating on the server, players know to notify me if someone is being annoyingi.e. abusing the mic capability and I take care of issues pretty quick. Thanks again.

Spamming is also:
1. Continuously purchasing grenades and tossing them, like when your T in office. Where you can buy nades and toss them into the hallway. 2. Continuously using radio commands over and over like "NEED BACKUP!" 3. Holding your MIC open, singing, talking or playing music. 4. Dropping and picking up weapons over and over and over. 5. Creating a script that typesto everyone the same thing over and over and over and over. Basically anything that you do in excess that annoys other players and can cause undue bandwidth usage resulting in LAG. |

The term "spamming" is also used in the older sense of something repetitious and disruptive by players of [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-person_shooter]first-person shooter[/link] computer games. In this sense, it refers to "area denial" tactics—repeatedly firing rockets or other explosive shells into an area—or to any tactic whereby a large volume of ammunition is expended in the hope of either scoring chance [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hit]hits[/link], covering teammates' [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance]advance[/link] with [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suppressive_fire]suppressive fire[/link], or clearing or defending an area from an enemy presence. Whether such tactics are viewed as cheating or abusive varies from game to game, community to community. Analogous to [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camping_%28computer_gaming%29]camping[/link], the tactical advantage gained by those thus engaged is the crux of the issue. If every player [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_%28sport%29]defensively[/link] "spams", and no one makes the [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offense_%28sports%29]offensive[/link] push, there will be no opportunities for players to come into conflict, and thus there will be no game. Games like [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capture_the_Flag]Capture the Flag[/link] help to break this deadlock by providing incentive to invade enemy territory, however risky. Conversely, the same term may be used to describe those who flood the in-game [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chat]chat[/link] with needlessly profuse and/or frequent messaging, similar to [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messaging_spam]messaging spam[/link] mentioned above. Although perceptions vary within the gaming community, in most arenas excessive messaging is unwelcome. On the other hand, in the [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_game]role-playing games[/link] [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUD]MUD[/link], [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUSH]MUSH[/link], and [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUCK]MUCK[/link], players happily continue using the word in this original sense, with no implication of abuse. When a player returns to the terminal after a brief break to find her screen wonderfully filled with pages of random chat, it's still called "spam". [link=http://www.graphxpress.com/cgi-bin/wcotp.cgi?date=19980407][12][/link] SPAM could also be taken to mean a set of humorous [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language]English[/link] [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backronym]backronyms[/link], including: Short/Stupid/Silly Particularly/Pointless Annoying Messages, Self-Promotional Advertising Material, Self Propelled Automatic Mail, Send Post All Members, Sending Persistently Annoying Mail, and Shit Posing As Mail. |

Ghetto Smoke,
Appreciate the background information on spamming. I didn't realize spamming could occur with weapons. I do occassionally as a T on de_dust go back to spawn and buy additional grenade and smoke. The smoke is to conceal my rush to the bomb site. Typically, at start of game I rush (90% of the time) to bomb site. If I am flashed or delayed by another T then I would hold back a bit and try to smoke out the tunnel. My biggest gripe is Ts not rushing as a team and overwhelming the CTs. I like T on the map because it's challenging . . . doesn't help my KD ratio since I'm usually in the front of the rush! OPREP |

Sup White,
I usually try to discourage the nade spamming and the like...especially on assault where you can nade spam the vents and doors as a t. Assualt is hard enough for cts without nade spamming. Chat spamming I don't do anything about unless there is a complaint or it really annoys me. (if it annoys me, I know it is annoying other people) The thoughtfulness you alway use in these forums leeds me to believe that you are a good admin and my advice to you is to just do what you think is fair and right. Sure every once in a while someone will complain, but there are always going to be crybabies playing cs. Most people can appreciate a fair and consistant admin. Personally, I try to just let the game play, but I am not afraid to take action when I think it is needed. Everyone's admin style will be a little different too but, as long as westay fair, I don't see how players will have a problem with it. Hope this helps, XTR33M
