How much control do they need...geez...first they enact a public smoking ban and now they are talking about not even letting you do it inYOUR car or ifYOUR rental residence is connected to someone else's. Today on the talk radio I was listening to, they are talking about maybe doing something about the obese problem....so now what, you are over-weight, walk into McDonald's and get turned away for having a body mass index that is too high? Smokers and really obese people are 2 of the major causes of the health care costs and I agree that we need to do something, but should the government be able to make us?....I get the smoking ban in restaurants, malls, schools and other such places....because I am a firm believer that your rights end where mine begin and vice versa......but no smoking in bars? in cigar shops? That is rediculous! If the market demand for a no smoking bar was so high, people would have opened one. This body mass index thing is crap too. At 6'04" it says I should weigh 196lbs....riiiiiiiiight....I weigh 260lbs..I have a 50" chest and a 34" waist! If I weighed 196lbs, I would be a pencil-neck and my ribs would show! President Bush is considered overweight! STUPID!!!!! If you need a pilot car and a back up beeper, you are obese....if you fart and there is a time delay before you hear the sound because sound only travels at 700mph, you are obese.....or if you could sell shade on ebay....you are obese...but please..some extra weight as long as you are healthy, big deal. What is next?....legislation that you have to step on a scale and have your height measured to buy a pizza? This big government crap is really getting on my nerves. It is not a conservative or liberal problem, it is a big government problem. Both of the major parties have been contributing to this invasion of our lives. What part they invade depends on their ideology....notice how that word sounds like idiot.....would it surprise anyone to know that in our state, Washington, the Indian tribes running casinos that can smoke and are exempt from state laws like the smoking ban, were the biggest contributors to the no smoking campaign? That is where the biggest problems with government lie...filthy stinking rich special interest groups. This kind of intrusive legislation will continue until we have some campaign contribution reform.....these people are buying their own way. When is America going to wake up and finally just say NO!
Let's hear your thoughts and other obsevations about this....

I don't mind some government initiatives or interventions, but they seem to get carried away sometimes and introduce overly invasive and impractical rules. It gets called "the nanny state" over here, which like most buzz words gets over used.

Smoking has been banned in most public buildings and places that serve food, which is fine by me. But there seems to be a desire by some people to stop people smoking outside, which I think is just daft. If you're on a busy street with lots of traffic it seems a bit unfair to target smokers when the pollution from cars is going to be more harmful to those nearby.

As for obesity, diabetes and other diet related diseases I can understand why governments want to take action, because these things are going to cause a lot of deaths and a lot of expense. Unlike smoking, fat and sugar filled foods are not taxed therefore the expense of treating the results of eating to much fat and sugar will be the governments responibility. So I'm all for the government trying to get people to eat more healthily, improving school meals and banning junk food adverts near schools or on kids tv.

I'll support a government trying to improve the health of its population as long as they don't go too far. Some people seem to object to being told that they should eat five portions of fruit and veg a day, why? they're not making you eat 5 a day, just giving you some good advice.

I was very surpised by that online gambling ban. Definately a government going to far.

Fat people are killing themselves. Smokers are killing themselves and everyone around them.

The smoking thing is stupid, I can't see people going outside a nightclub for a cigarette.

come to Boston some weekend...pretty much every club and bar will have at least a small crowd of people outside smoking. The one upside is that it makes it easier to meet women and you already know they won't shoot you down just for being a smoker;)

Smoking is banned up here in Scotland mate. A lot of the bars have spent a fair bit of money puting in outside seating areas with patio heaters and roofed sections to keep the "smokers" happy.

Some of the nightclubs have even gone as far as putting in "mini-lockers" just big enough for your pint glass so it stays safe and "tamper free" while you go have your cigarette.

I'm all in favour as i used to work behind a bar and hated breathing in other peoples smoke. Now we can go out for a good evening and not go home with your hair and clothes stinking of "fag reek" lol.

Also it's quite amazing to see how trouble free the "mass populace" has taken to it and it seems second nature for people to go outside to smoke now.

Heaven help the first UK government to attempt to ban smoking outside though........

god i can't type for s@@t today :(

If you dont smoke yourself, you will notice the stanch of it much more...
However Belgium and Holland, smoking in clubs, bars restaurant etc. is still allowed, i think it's gonna take some time to ban smoking from those public places... i've seen bars tho around here, who had to close their bars because they banned smoking and not enough people came anymore...
As for you guys... I just hope you do not set an example for the rest of europe, cos that would be a big bugger lol... You see me standing outside a fancy restaurant smoking in between dinners??? No! Didn't think so either :D"

So as far as i am conceirned, stop being racist to smokers, and give them their joy as much as you give joy to all the other people!!

That's what i think of it in short ;)I hope i was able to make my point clear, if not, i'll post again...

Cheers Mist

Smoking Sucks! <----:D sucks.. get it?? lol (*sigh*)

I am pro the banning of smoking in public establishments such as restaurants ect... Its still not banned in all pubs, bars and clubs here, and i'd like to see the day they ban smoking out in the open Streets, Parks etc... There will be big protests, but the British are too soft. We let our Government walk all over us.

Take the Poll Tax riots.... they seemingly overpowered the public by 'giving in' but what did they do.??? just changed the name to Council Tax! (More or less)

Then there was the big Fuel Price Protests..... wasnt long before Blair had the country on its knees begging for forgiveness and what happened here.... prices were altered into cost per litre instead of gallons! Why? Thinking we are so stupid we could work out how much we were paying?? lol;)

Ok my rant is over!
