Military Draft

So yeah I did a awarded essay on the Military Draft recently, so what do think about the reinstation of "conscription?"

Conscription is the common means for almost every country in the world to recruit for their armed forces.

The United States is a very rare bird indeed to NOT use it. The concept of an all volunteer army is very old (relative to our country's age) - with the Continental army being entirely volunteer based.

Until the 1850's, the US Military was volunteer based except for the occasional conscription based on prison time.

WW1 saw the serious inducement of conscription. It was not a popular war. WWII saw it as well, but something like 80% of the US military was volunteer.

The draft continued until Vietnam in which it was eliminated.

I don't think you will see a conscription program again in the United States in your life time shy of a major conflict that requires lots of manpower.

The concept of volunteer army gives us a lot of morale credibility among our enemies. Its one thing to fight against someone who has been forced into service. Quite another to fight someone who is there of his own free will or because you pissed him off enough to make him join ;0

i agree wit wat weaver says the draft will not happen in this country after the vietnam insident so u dont need to worry about it but it might happen some day if u look at the facts wit north korea there doin nuclear activities and refussed to gather wit un and the iran and afgahistain its all a matter of time that we will c WWIII theres alot of coruption going on and where in the middle of it and at any givin momment it will explode like a volcano

I do not believe we need a draft because our military force has become so high - tech that randomly drafted people will have alot of trouble using it.
Even worse if they aren't very intelligent.

I believe less than 20% of members in the Senate or the House have military experience right now unlike decades ago.

I agree, unless it's an all out war, the draft will not happen. Too much political and public opposition.

How hard is it to fire a rifle? They teach you that in basic. Anyone with tech experience has to be trained prior to using the equipment, obviously

The day in age we live in is so sophisticated we can use ICBM's and other weapons...just have a volunteer army protecting our boarders...whoops I forgot we don't have nay more because of the North American Union. According to Thomas Malthus we need war due to population growth theory btw...

Shouldn't you guys find homes for the 250,000 war vets sleeping under bridges first before conscription is even mentioned ?

I know , that is a low blow but for crying out loud , don't you people give a #$%# about your war vets ?

Jerry... we don't conscript the guys who launch the ICBMs or do any of the rocket science.

We can seriously have an army full of rocket scientists and people of that technical sort and would never have to step a foot by a ground soldier on the battlefield.

Until of course, saturation bombing fails or a guy with a gun steps on American soil.

We have no need for soldiers if we are happy with carpet bombing as a solution and don't need to 'occupy' a country.

Smart volunteers.. are needed.

When I come of age I will. However, current enlistment and academy attendance requirements prevent entering just yet.
