My coach is pretty freaking reatarded. I am one of the best hitters on his team and he takes the bat out of my hands every at bat. Then last year I was all-county shortstop and now this year the retard sticks me in the outfield every game. I have been thinking about quitting for the past month. I'm just about to pull the pin on this guy and quit. Any suggestions?

I know how you feel oojerry
Up to this year, I played baseball all my life. Excluding first base, I played every position and made my fair share of all-star teams. When I got into highschool, everything got to be different. Instead of just letting us have fun, they were making someone bunt every few at bats. Not to say I was an outstanding batter, but I recall one game when my coach had me try to bunt for a base hit twice...Failed both times. I had found myself tobe the startingsecond basemen, and there were two other guys gunning for that position. They werent very good defensively, and both had bad arms, but they got to rotate the position and my coach stuck me in the outfield cause he knew that those two kids wouldn't be able to throw it to the plate from out there, and I could. That really sucked, cause those kids decided to rub it in my face. I was tempted to tell them that the only reason they got that spot is because they can't throw for crap...but oh well. The only advice I can give you is to just do your best at practice and at the games. Hopefully your coach will notice and give you the credit you deserve. All this probably didn't help, but I felt like complaining

rugby is my personal favorite.... i played baseball for a long while and i quit because i got burnt out on it Coaches aren't sup[posed to take sides on different players. Maybe the kids mom who plays shortstop now sleep with your coach who knows!

Jerry,
I recognize that you initiated your question mid May and surly have made a decision by now, but I thought I could offer some thoughts based on my life experiences that you may consider the next time your faced with a similar dilemma which in fact I can almost guarantee you will some day. Daily many people are faced with a similar dilemma’s as yours. They may feel or know they are the strongest person in their current position (whatever it may be; sports, waiter, marketing manager, etc…) yet, the coach/boss has chosen someone else or assigned them to a position which they don’t consider their strength. The first thing to consider rationally is the totality of the circumstances. What is the coach/boss thinking?” Could it be he/she is trying to make me; more well-rounded? Could it be the coach/boss is trying to compensate (move you) for what he/she perceives as the best chance for the team to win or accomplish their cooperate goals? Having the courage to face adversity (however unfair it seems) can be far more rewarding in the long run, than quitting. If you have not viewed the movie; “Rudy,” than I strongly encourage you to rent it. It is a true story about a young boy who was five foot nothing, one hundred in nothing pounds, yet he successfully became a walk on player for Notre Dame Football. Although his story varies from yours in the fact you have more talent than he did in his sport, the lesson is clearly his ability to face adversity. Another tool you will continue to develop throughout life is the ability to manage up. What I mean by this is having the ability to articulate respectively to your superior some of your questions or concerns. Example using your scenario (private conversation with coach): “Coach, do you have a minute? I just wanted to ask you; “Have I done something wrong recently that has made you change my position?” By you taking ownership with the question, “Have I done something wrong?” You will most likely receive an honest answer as to why he made the change. Now be prepared for an answer you may not agree with, but it will assist you in understanding what he/she was thinking. Furthermore, you may find even a greater satisfaction by realizing that the coach in his/her infinite wisdom views you as the solution to their problem and is placing more responsibility on you because they believe your talent will compensate for your inexperience in a particular position etc…. In closing, I will challenge you just as I do my children, peers, and family, to provide solutions to problems and minimize being the problem. Best of luck to you in your next challenge ![]() T,J,

Well i do not mean to brag. I am on the varsity baseball team as a freshman. Now i have played baseball all my life. I am little over 6 feet and i play 3rd base. jerry, the best advice i have for you is to try your best at what your coach tells you to do. My coach did not play me for a while. I had to work my hiny off every practice while all seniers did crap and still got there posistionsin the field/batting order. Aventually my coach relized how bad i wanted to play and that i worked hard at what he would tell me to do etc.
So my main point is dont quit. You will regret it. when your out of college or in college. If your coach puts you in the outfield then work hard at it and he will bring you back down to shortstop. Hope all is well and dont quit man. -Grenade
