PS3 Advice
Posted: Sep 29, 2009, 01:01:36
So I've decided to get myself a PS3, a 120Gb PS3 slim. About the best price I've found so far is £229.99 or £249.99 with a game. Most of the games in bundles I can pick up for less than the £20 except for Need for Speed Shift, InFamous and Killzone 2. Anyone recommend any of those?
Is there anything else I'll need to get for it? I'll be getting a second controller, any other accessories I'll need?
I could do with some game recommendations too. I'll be getting Dirt 2 at some point, though it's a bit expensive at the moment. So what are everyone's favourite games?

Yes you'll need an HDMI cable if you're connecting it to an HD ready TV as you don't actually get one in the box
You'll also probably need to get a DVD remote as trying to watch movies and surf their menu interface with the controller is a bit of a nightmare....you can get one for £10.00
Killzone II is a good game if a bit over hyped when it came out....pick up a copy of Assassins Creed from a bargain bin someplace is AC2 is coming soon and looks great.
You can get Resistance Fall of Man and Resistance 2 cheap now as they've been out for some time......
Wet is a cracking game but, again, is just out so shop around to see how cheap you can get it. Also don't be afraid to buy "pre-owned" games from the usual stores (Are you allowed to name places on here LOL) as most of them are in really good condition.
Hope this helps.

Killzone 2 is worth getting, especially if you're going to play multiplayer online.
Call of duty games are good too, but i'd get the pc versions.
Infamous is entertaining first time round, has no replayability or multiplayer.
Prototype is pretty similar to infamous... don't buy both if you do buy either.
GTA 4.....
Assassins creed but again limited replayability but definitely worth it if you find it in a bargain bin.
Little big planet is supposed to be fun but i haven't played it.
Resistance is ok, but again only really worth it out of the bargain bin.
Gran Turismo 5 will probably be good, except that its not out till december. Equally dirt 2 is a gd option for racing games. oh and do not get gt5 prologue it isnt a complete game if i'm honest.
Any of the Metal gear solid games are worth it.
The rockband/ guitar heroes games are worth it if you get multiple ontrollers and play with other people, they're still fun on single player but no where near as much fun as with friends.
The need for speed games are massively overated and if you actually want a decent racing game go gran turismo or Dirt.
Haze is another game but again only from the bargain bin as its just ur average fps game in many respects.
Fifa games have been steadily improving while the pro evo soccor games have been going down hill. (in my opinion)
Obviously a second controller, personally i'm happy using the remote for dvds so i'd try it myself before buying dvd controller. HDMI cable is essential of HD-TV. If you're planning on going online alot then a wireless headset/mic is worth looking at. If you've got wi-fi don't worry about a cable for connecting to internet as the wireless option works perfectly well on mine.
There are a fair few ps2 games which are really good but i'm not sure whether you ps3 will be backwards compatible, mine isn't but some models are.

Try again gran turismo 5 comes out next year. They announced it yesterday, sometime in march for japan so rest of the world a bit later maybe a month later or so. And the prolouge wasnt meant to be a full game. It was a taste. Thats why it was so cheap when it first came out. (20 dollars cheaper then new full games). As for the dvd controller im fine using the menu on the screen aswell... dosnt bother me that much.

Thanks for the suggestions.
So far I'm leaning towards getting it with NFS Shift and then picking up GTA IV and maybe Killzone2/Resistance 1 or 2/Assassins Creed if they are pretty cheap. I'm going to be getting it at Game so I will be browsing the preowned section.
I want a bit of a mix of games, so something drivey, something shooty and something footbally would be good. I've always preferred Pro Evo over Fifa but from recent reviews I might wait a while and try out some demos before choosing.
I'm not going to be using it much for online play, at least initially. But I will be playing with friends so good 2 player split screen games would be nice.
I've not got a HD ready TV so don't need an adaptor yet and I'm not planning on watching many movies on it. One thing I almost forgot to check was connecting it to my old TV, it only has an RFU connector, that doesn't come with the PS3 but I understand that you can use the one from a PS2, is that correct?

yea im almost 100% sure the ps2 ones will work for ps3 the plug is identical i believe. Ill give it a testing when i can/if i can. Intec G5290 Universal RFU Adapter that is an adapter for all the systems(except wii) to rfu :) Also if you have anything else that has Audio video plugs (the colored ones as i like them being called :p) aslong as they are input ;-) you can connect the ps3 that way. I use my home theater system for that. Although i use the output audio video ones to plug to the tv. But it has the rfu one aswell.

Phil,
HMV and Gamestation (which is owned by the same parent company as Game) also do pre-owned cheaper games and I even spotted Haze in Morrisons up here for £7.00.
Shop around

Gta Iv is what i'd go for, as i have it, but the call of duty series is very good as is the battlefield series.

I now have a shiny new PS3 along with GTA IV, NFS Shift and Pro Evo 2008 (£3 preowned ;)). It's a nice machine, looks good and it pretty quiet. Next job is to get it online.
Mostly been playing GTA IV so far, loving that apart from the dating and man dates it seems to want you to go on all the time. Also one mission seemed to involve signing up for an email account, that was exciting :rolleyes1:
My brother spectacularly failed on a date. He took her to a bar, thought he'd see if he could order drinks, pressed the wrong button and punched the bar. Then a bouncer attacked him so he killed bouncer, went outside and 2 more bouncers attacked so he got in his car, crashed straight into a police car then was dragged out and shot dead.
