I'm not looking forward to Vista. It wil be like all previous Microsoft products, it will try to do too much. And it will do it all badly.

Microsoft will try to include everything that any user could possibly want, browser, media player, firewall, anti virus, publishing, internet browser etc. And I bet they will all be worse than stuff you can already get.

The only reason i upgraded to XP from ME was so I could get CSS to work. Dammit I'd still be using DOS if it were up to me.

well we most of the ppl on earth will get VISTA as soon as it comes out caz all the lastest software and games will need vista to run better and faster on VISTA; and it no longer XP at that time ; and CSS , i think it should run fine with xp caz its designed for XP and if u run on vista ; its depends on ur computer , how fast it is and if u use a computer that designedfor Windows Vista is should be 2 times better then the XP's computer we all have by now.

unless u play some new game that are made after vista comes out !

I completely disagree with most of what you said oZ. The vast majority of people will not run out an buy Vista when it first comes out. Most people learned from Microsoft's last couple of operating systems (think XP and ME..possibly the single worst OS ever inflicted on computer users) that Microsoft doesn't release a new operating system that is "good"...they release a steaming pile of crap and push it on vendors to get them to make it the default OS on the new computers they sell, then spend the next couple of years releasing service packs and updates to fix as much as they can. It took almost 2 years for XP to really start catching on, and it was a complete piece of garbage until service pack one fixed most of the major problems. With service pack 2 XP finally became a (mostly) stable and solid OS, but it also screwed up a lot of existing software. There are still a lot of people who are using Win98 and Win2000, and a lot of people who made the mistake of buying WinME still refuse to buy a new OS because ME was so bad.
Now, add to that the fact that even major manufacturers like Dell only have a general idea of what kind of hardware people will need to run Vista and you understand why they haven't started hyping it yet. Right now Microsoft is only preliminary specs for what kind of machine you'll need for Vista, and the specs they are giving for what you'll need just to run the OS are rediculous (512MB RAM and a 64MB video card just to run the OS? are you even serious?) which means if you want to actually do anything that takes a bit of computing muscle (like gaming) you'll need at least 2x the minimum, preferably 3 or 4x that. To put it in other terms, Vista is so blated and resource hungry that if you load it onto a system that would have been considered a gamer's dream machine in 2004, the computer would start crying for mercy anytime you opened Word.
The lack of finalized code means that right now Microsoft is the only company that even can start making games and programs for it, and a lot of stuff that's out now won't run on it. Even Microsoft freely admits that people who switch to Vista are going to basically have to buy all thier programs all over again. And what do we get for all this headache? A new desktop interface, IE7, and MediaPlayer11! Oooohhh..yah, there's a bunch of reasons to spend a couple hundred on a new operating system, and several hundred more to either upgrade hardware or buy a new computer to run it. Most of what I've been seeing from beta testers has boiled down to "save your money. in a year or 2 they might fix enough to make it worth upgrading to, but as of the latest beta version it's just bloated bells and whistles that don't always work". All of the big "must have" features they are hoping will get people to make the switch are already available for XP in the form of free downloads that do the job better.
Maybe by sometime in 2008 Microsoft will have fixed enough of thier own bad ideas to make Vista worth getting, but anyone who runs out and buys it when it first comes out is begging for a headache.

I completely agree with fallen1. It will take sometime for Vista to be a decent OS without a heap of bugs and glitches.

I wont upgrade to vista for a long time if I ever do. I think Im going to switch to gentoo before I switch to vista even though Im a long time windows user. Maximum PC said that they werent to impressed with Vista Beta 2 as a whole. They just didn't feel that compelled enough to recommend it was worth upgrade to when it comes out.

*Bows to Fallen1* Again you save me a lot of typing....even Windows 2000 had it's compatability issues...It hated win9x applications. The very fact that Microsoft Hasn't pushed it hard lets us know it's a piece of crap, and they know it. What kills me about this whole scenario, is the collusion that must be involved with both software and hardware manufacturers. How would you like to buy Vista, then find out your copy of source or 1.6 won't work on it.....AND on top of that, you need like a 7 series Geforce pci-x to play your newly purchased copy of Vista-compatable cs source. You know, I just upgraded my machine and cs source and all my other games runWAY above fine and my XP hasn't crashed a program since SP2 was installed. I say lets some other schmucks guinea pig their new OS. Wouldn't it piss you off that they sell you an incomplete OS, use you to find bugs and problems, and then charge YOU for the OS? It would me.

yes and no. you will need fairly new hardware to even run Vista, but the new chip (that isn't available yet) people will need to play media protected with Microsoft's new DRM (planned for use mainly with bluray and HDDVD) will be on the video card. You won't have to have the chip to run Vista, just to play media that uses certain kinds of DRM. At the moment all the manufacturers are claiming that thier cards are "ready" for the new technology, but what they aren't saying is that the new chips aren't actually on any of the cards they are selling now and that it can't be added to cards after they have been manufactured. Currently none of the video card manufacturers have announced plans to sell aftermarket cards with the chip, so they will only be available in pre-built machines (Dell, Gateway, etc). Without the chip you either won't be able to play media that contains that kind of DRM, or the media will be automatically downsampled to a much lower quality. Oh, and if a group like the MPAA decided that certain cards are to easy to hack in order to get around the DRM Microsoft will simply include those cards in a "restricted list" that will be packaged with critical updates. The restricted list will tell Vista that the usthorization for that video card to play protected content has been revoked, and it will no longer be able to play things that require the chip (even things you already own that had worked perfectly).

If you want your desktop to look like Vista without getting Vista you are in luck. Here is a windows Vista theme.

Here is what my desktop looks like with it.

Its pretty cool, I'd recommend it.

I think all that means it the taskbar should be either the default blue or silver. Basically no other theme mods you put on your computer. It should just be the windows XP theme.

Also the taskbar may not look as it should if when you install when it is 2 sections high as opposed to the default 1 section high. (reference my desktop for the 1)
