Default Best (Free) anti virus?

What would you guys say the best anti virus is. And the best on that's free.

My Norton ran out and i'm using Avast until I renew it. Should I be using something else?

Norton is probably the #1 there is...but it is a notorious resource hog (supposedly fixed in latest version, but I'll let you know more about my experiences with it once I've had more time to play with it.)

Avast constantly rates among the top antivirus programs (both free and paid) in testing by various security firms and magazines. It also is easy on system resources and is one of the fastest to push out updates to protect against new threats.

MrHood,

If you look in the SpawnPoint "Features" section - you will see a review for the "Best AntiVirus" for gaming...

IMO, the best free av is AVG, and the best paid is NOD32.

Default RE: Best (Free) anti virus?

Hi,

See http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/09...-antivirus-is/ for one list. Kaspersky is in the #1 spot which is typical of most of these lists online. It's not free but independant studies confirm is it the best virus scanner available. How do I define the best? It catches more than the others, more often, and typically they are as quick to respond to new outbreaks as Symantec (possibly even quicker). I have never used this.

In #2 you have AOL's virus scanner. This is a FREE version of Kaspersky though your options while using it are more limited. I used it briefly based on the fact that it's Kaspersky under the covers but I found the interface too restrictive and I just plain dont like AOL. Performance was generally unaffected by the scanner, i.e. it was no worse than any other virus scanner running.

Personally I'm running AVG free ( http://free.grisoft.com ) on my XP machines and have been for months. Unfortunately while Grisoft claim AVG is Vista compatible it's a bit broken at the moment - sure it scans okay but you can't configure it propertly due to new security restrictions (Microsoft do not confirm their vista capabilities). On the Vista PCs here I've switched to Avast Free (14 months per key, free key every 14 months) and that seems to be running fine - it's MS certified for vista and according to everything I can get my hands on is better than AVG. Further, it doesnt seem to slow down gaming much/at all either.

Generally speaking amongst IT pros you'll find preference is given to Kaspersky or NOD32. Most gamers seem to opt for AVG.

IMO the best free anti-virus there is....

Ubuntu Linux

it's great....no worrying about Windows viri, no dealing with MS introducing new security holes with every update, and completely free (well, other than the cost of one blank CD)

(sorry, had to say it)

if you wanna pay for an Anti Virus, check out F-Prot. I use it, its good, and allows for a 30 day try before you buy. Otherwise I say AVG and Norton Corporate 10. The Norton one isn't too bad of a resource hog...otherwise, buy an Apple Macintosh PC or install *nix (Unix/Linux) on ur PC...but ONLY if you're of an advanced computer user....

"Trojan.peacomm"

I enable it and it protects me again.
