Up Side / Down Side

ok, so I'm guessing at least some people have noticed I haven't been in the servers for a week now. I've been having computer "issues" I've been trying to deal with.

The down side is my main computer crapped out last Monday.

Upside: This made me get my butt in gear and finish my spare parts/mod machine

Downside: It wouldn't boot and I thought I had fried the video card when I was testing components in my main computer

Upside: After a day of reading tech forums and screwing around with different ideas I got the spare parts machine up and running

Downside: If I had just RTFM I would have had it up and running in 5 minutes (DOH!)

Upside: I now have a Linux box again

Downside: My Windows machine is still screwed

Upside: the motherboard is from Asus and has a 3 year warranty

Downside: still waiting to hear back from them on how to get it serviced/replaced

Upside: I have a laptop and could still go online all week

Downside: The laptop is kind of old and can't run CS

Upside: I have decided to get a new laptop

Downside: they can be expensive

Upside: where I work has a PC purchase program that gives us a discount from Dell (up to something like 14% depending on the computer) plus a 25% reimbersement (up to $500 per year) for any desktop, laptop, or printer (but not individual components) that I buy anywhere

Downside: do you have any idea how many laptops there are to choose from? lol


so that's the up side/down side version of what's been going on for the last week. hopefully I'll hear back about getting the motherboard replaced under warranty sometime today or tomorrow, and even if they won't replace it for some reason I can pick up a replacement on my own to get my system up and running again if I have to.

Upside: Asus warranties RULE! I finally had time to pull the motherboard from my main computer and send it to Asus so they could check it. The got it, read my note about what I did to troubleshoot the problem, hooked it up to their testing equipment, and said "Yup, it's dead" then mailed me a new one. The replacement board came yesterday and after I hooked everything up my computer booted right up without any problems and is running perfectly.

well thats why they sent you your motherboard so fast you told them you were buying a laptop from them lol , these specs look just like a mac notebook knockoff ... like the commercial ... well it has a built in webcam ... is it taped on too lol ...........j/k fallen

Hey fallen this is more like a tennis match that a computer issue lol It looks like you won though. I have only one question....WHAT WAS THE FINAL SCORE (EITHER IN POINTS OR $$$$)?

lol...final score: 1 new motherboard = 10 min on phone with Asus, $5 shipping, 9 days from when I shipped it to when the new one arrived
1 new laptop = $1300, 2 days from order until I had it, 1 massive smile that lasted for weeks at how much this thing kicks butt at everything

Asus got to keep a customer happy, and therefore still a customer

I got a 2 year old motherboard replaced and it only cost me $5, plus I finally got motivated to finish work on my case mod project and to finally buy a new laptop (which I'd been thinking about for months anyway)

I'd call this a win
