Spore....All it's cut out to be?
Posted: Sep 11, 2008, 07:56:31
I'm looking to maybe buy "spore" for the pc at the weekend but have heard pretty much conflicting views on the game.
Anyone here bought it and willing to discuss it's pros and cons before I bite the bullet and spend money?
Thanks,
Rob

I played 2 hours and I'm already bored!!!
I will give it a second chance tonight but seems to be over hyped so far.

OK, I gave it a 2nd and a 3rd chance I reached the tribal Phase an I can say 1 thing, I want the few hours I spent on it back.
I find it nice how you can create creatures (Free Download) but the rest of the game is mind numbing and childish, no strategy in attacking and evolving except mayhem and if you die .... ohh well no problem start again like nothing happened. You don't want to attack you want to socialite well be lame and dance and chant and pose by clicking the corresponding short cut key, no skills not even a mini game is required only the the question did you play long enough to get the upgrades required to do what you want.
It seems to me that it's a BAD rip off/spin off from the Civilization franchise now that was a good game. Spore did not even offer the slightest amount of fun I was hoping for and I'm sad to say that even the lame Sims series tops this game in my opinion.
I'll go uninstall now...

I've just got up to the Space age and it looks a lot more promising than the early stages.
The game is broken into 5 ages:
Cell. Find food to grow, kill stuff to get new bits to stick on your cell and run away from stuff that wants to eat you. Was ok, can't say I'll be looking forward to replaying it.
Creature. Grow legs and go ally with or exterminate other creatures. You wander around meeting or killing other creatures, again with the aim of collecting add ons for your creature. This was ok although my creature looked rubbish because I kept just sticking stuff to it so it was great at killing stuff.
Tribal. The worst of the stages, you've got a little village, breed, gather food, build village add ons then go either ally or exterminate the other creatures. The best part of this stage is that it is short.
Civilisation. Sort of Civ meets C&C but with less depth and details. You have to capture all the cities or maybe ally, not sure I'd decided on an extermination policy at this point. Your city can build 3 types of building and some defences, you can eventually build 3 types of unit, ground, sea and air. There is some resource to gather. This stage was ok, a bit shallow for seasoned gamers.
Space. Only just got there but this is apparently the game proper and looks much more interesting than the previous stages. I'll post more when I've played it some more.
From what I've read the early stages are more to customise your species, I suppose you could think of it like grinding in mmorpgs, it's not that much fun or challenging but it lets you enjoy the game more later on. The customization options are fun, easy to use and allow for a huge amount of variety.

I'm aware. That's why I thought that would be a cool (and completely against the TOS) forum.

Sigh,
Thanks for making things about as clear as "mud" so far guys....
I guess I was kind of expecting a "this game is super and great" from everyone :(
Now I'm in the should I or should I not stage :confused::confused:

Raven have you tried the creature editor? There's a demo of it you only get a selection of the parts, but it's still pretty cool :D

Well, me and my brother have just bought spore, and i must say, it's really original! :D I think the best thing about spore is not the whole RTS and the "RPG" element of the game, but more the creative side of the player that is important.
At first i was making tanks, as tanks should be, planes as planes should be, dragons as dragons should be! and so on, and on. :P
but when I play along I realised that you can ajust your creature, buildings, cars, planes, etc all by yourself, the fun thing is trying to make something completly original, totally different from your normal expectations of things. :)
The cell stage is quite boring though, but when you first set foot on land, it began to interest me, i've changed my character a dozen times! The concept is quite easy. It's not a game for the hard-core gamer who doesn't like to be creative.
I say buy! :D

As Topac says, it's your creativity that makes the game fun, I put my guys head on his stomach and legs on the back.. you know what the guy worked perfectly. The funny thing is you download the "styles" and creatures of other players so the game is never hte same.
The first stages are just a "tutorial" for space age, then you can scape worlds.... or blow them up ^^
I enjoy it and recommend it, but it's all up to you ;)

It's alright as a full game, but nothing is especially fantastic except the actual creation of the creature. Not to mention if you install the game 3 times you can't play it anymore and need a new key - which is ridiculous.

Sorry L4rk, I love the zero punctuation reviews too, just a bit sweary;).
I'm planning on doing a review of Spore in the next week or two. I found it initially a little underwhelming but there is a good game in there, I think it depends what you were expecting.

I have it :D and il give you the quick good an bad points..
Good
- total manipulation over your : creature, structures, vehicles, spaceships, Which is jolly good fun :)
- Very entertaining and cute and colourful
- Lots of unlockable body parts and stuff to add to your creature
- Lots of different planets to explore and conquer
- Online play is very expansive
Bad .. :(
- It was really fun.. til i got to the space age.. where everything seemed to be a bit slow and repepetive.. in fact when i got to the space age, i started again on a different planet.
- Dialogue is very repepetive..
- Basically everything is quite repetetive.. And this leads to you losing interest quite fast.. might not apply to everyone but certainly to me.
- There is a limit on how complex your creature can be.. This really does limit to how bizzare you creature can become.. which restricts fun value :(
Overall.. its a decent game.. wouldn't pay full price for it though.. As the novelty soon wears off.
