Tabloid Journalism Hits New Low

In the UK we have a tabloid newspaper called the News Of The World, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp. It's mostly concerned with celebrity gossip and not liking foreign types.

It's recently found itself at the center of a police investigation and numerous lawsuits after it hit on the ingenious idea of hacking into people's voicemail accounts. Mostly these were celebrities, royalty and politicians, it was illegal to do it and it was also pretty low, even for tabloid journalists.

However, it has emerged that it wasn't just celebrities, politicians and royalty who had their voicemail hacked. Apparently they also hacked into the voicemail of a missing 13yr old girl who was later found murdered. It was a very big story at the time, so presumably they thought that listening to increasingly desperate messages from her family and friends would somehow help them sell more newspapers.

It gets even worse as according to one newspaper they actually deleted some messages, which gave her relatives hope that she was still alive and interfered with the police investigation.

The family of the murdered girl are going to suing the newspaper.

All this has not yet been proven in a court of law, but the source of this news is the police and hacking voicemail was standard practice.

Wow.

And it gets worse:

Apparently they also hacked the voicemail of grieving relatives of some of the victims of the 7/7 terrorist attacks, the parents of 2 murdered children, the parents of a missing child, the family of another dead child and the mother of a murdered woman. I expect more to follow.

No one picking up on this? It's a massive story. Perhaps John Oliver can explain it better than me:

Aside from the updates here, I've not hear much of it on U.S. the Casey Anthony ordeal is pretty much drowning everything else out. As far as snooping around and eavesdropping goes, thats nothing really unexpected from tabloids. Interfering and hindering police invesigations and personal affairs, however, especially under circumstances involving murders and homicides, should result in termination of the outlet and mandatory sentencing for those directly involved and those who gave authorization.

Unfortunately I will not besuprised if they are served only a small fine, as thats usually how these things turn out. They will be hardest hit by charges pressed by the victims, but they may settle and continue with their disgusting practice.

I've not had the time desired to fully read into this story,

but I appreciate your updatest! :)

My favorite part of this was the $3.4 billion single day devaluation of News Corp on Monday. Losing $1.15 per share distributed over 2 billion shares... That's a lot of money for one company to lose.

So we've had the most senior policeman in the country resign along with another senior policeman who was in charge of reinvestigating the phone hacking allegations. Two senior News International have also resigned.

There are now allegations regarding Fox news phone hacking and the FBI are apparently investigating claims that 9/11 victims were targetted.

Today we had Rupert and James Murdoch appearing in front of a Select Commitee of MPs to answer questions about the whole thing. Rupert Murdoch didn't appear to know anyone or anything.

Then some utter tit shoved a plate of shaving foam in his face, honestly, I'm not making this up. Murdoch's wife took a swing at him before he got arrested. Apparently the guy who did it is some kind of comedian, but the only funny thing was that apparently his girlfriend changed her Twitter status to "Not funny. Not clever. Not your girlfriend". Lol.

I guess the only shock I have about this is that the world is shocked to find out about these kinds of practices. I am surprised after the whole "Lady Diana" thing that the British government didn't grab those tabloids by the ankles and shake until all the roaches fell out. Those types of reporters make me just a sick as the ones that tapped the phones of little dead girl and 9/11 victims. I beleive Lady Diana be alive today if she wasn't being leg humped by slimy papaprazzi. I would love to see some regulations on them come from this as well.

*new law* if paparazzi are blocking your driveway, you can mow them down like bowling pins with no consequences.

Latest updates:

News of the World. A little girl got murdered by a paedophile, her mum wanted new laws that are like megan's law (I think that's right) in the US. So the NotW befriended her and ran a successful campaign to change the law. Rebekah Brooks (former NotW editor and until recently Chief Exec at News International) gave her a phone so she could keep in touch with supporters of the campaign. The mother has been informed by police that her name and phone details were found in the possession of the guy who had already been found guilty of carrying out the phone hacking. Another former NotW editor has been arrested in connection to phone hacking and police bribery.

James Murdoch has more questions to answer after he told the Parliamentary Commitee that he had no knowledge of any phone hacking. Two former senior NotW employees say he knew.

The Mirror newspaper is facing accusations that it hacked phones too. Heather Mills (Paul McCartney's ex wife) has said a senior journalist was quoting messages left on her phone to her. Piers Morgan even said he'd listened to to an answerphone message left by Paul McCartney in a national newspaper. Of course he denies any knowledge of phone hacking despite obviously having listened to people's private messages. Piers Morgan had to resign as editor years ago after the Mirror published some obvious fake pictures of "British troops urinating on Iraqi prisoners". Seriously, why does this **** have a high profile chat show in the US?

IDK....he is an ass but he won the Apprentice and helps Donald Trump. It is like politics, it is not what you know, but who you know. There are plenty of people over here trying to fill the void left by Oprah....I don't watch that drivel. Oprah got ratings the right way, these wannabees are doing it by trying to be controversial or just plain slimy.

I would love to see some people get taken down to Chinatown for that phone tapping business. That is a federal offense over here and comes with a pretty stiff sentence. Hopefully they will put those on trial responsible for that over there because over here, if you are rich, you lawyers are FAR smarter than the procecutors are and you have a good chance of getting off....I point to OJ Simpson as proof of that.....or better yet, let's put them on trial in Italy. Look at the Amanda Knox trial over there. They put people in prison over there with the flimsiest of non proof and wild speculations by procecutors being investigated for a crime themselves during the trial lol.

OK, last attempt at posting this.

This hasn't gone away, there have been more arrests and james Murdoch is going to be recalled to appear in front of MPs after former senior employees claimed he was aware of phone hacking. He'd said he had no knowledge of anything in his last appearence.

One story I found interesting is this: Some News Corp shareholders (major investment bank types) have issued a "legal complaint" accusing the company of widespread corporate misconduct that extends well beyond the News Of The World phone hacking scandal.

"the complaint focuses on the controversial business tactics of two News Corp subsidiaries in America, its advertising arm News America Marketing and a manufacturer of satellite TV smart cards called NDS Group Plc."

"In legal documents, the shareholders allege that the two companies were accused by multiple parties of "stealing computer technology, hacking into business plans and computers and violating the law through a wide range of anti-competitive behaviour"
