I am having an sue with my computer that has been going on for the past 2 days and still going on..

The issue I am having with my computer is that some servers where it comes from vent, world of warcraft or counter-strike. Which means that something is definately going on since other people are connecting to the server. Norton anti-virus says there is nothing wrong although I heard it isn't too good from different opinions.

If anyone has a solution please post, thank you.

Sorry about the mispelling on the word "sue" which was meant to spell issue, and not that I know of Jerry, the norton I am using is downloaded form the internet yes. It says everything is functioning alright.:sp:

well i know your problem...its norton. Norton screws up your computer and so does every other anti-virus program except for pc-cillin which is a very good program. So get rid or norton and you may perhaps have to reformat(doubtful) but yea Norton screws up all comps...ive seen it in every comp that has it...my friend had to get a whole new one cause it messed up his operating system which is pretty bad cause he would've had to reinstall his operating system, reformat, and reinstall all of his drivers and games, but instead he just got a new comp. So that's a reason to not use Norton.

I've been using Nortons (amongst others) for about 6 years solid now with NO ISSUES AT ALL.

Blue can you be more clear as to what your problem actually is please?

Your first post makes no sense at all :(

Sorry Raven if I didn't make the first post more clear. I was just so frustrated with what has been going on.

Basically the servers, such as vent and counter-strike servers I use to play on were deleted from my friends list and I cannot connect to them. Though my friends connect to them which I don't understand. Same with vent, one vent server I go on every day says I cannot connect although the information is correct. Again, people are on that vent server. I am not sure if it is my norton anti-virus since I have had it before and nothing like this had ever happen. I did a full system scan from the norton that says nothing is wrong with my computer.

It recently started the other day just for no reason. I didn't download anything huge.

I don't understand since I though maybe a disk defragment and a disk clean-up might work but obviously not.

I am not entirely sure of the issue in this case maybe someone has this issue or had this and knows the solution. I hope this makes it much more clear Raven.

Did you check for spywares and such?

Firewalls?

Port forwarding?

Those are all things that can kill your connection with the servers.

Well if norton checks for spyware, yes. Not sure but how would I do all that? I am not very professional I guess you can say when the subject is about computers. Right now I am running off of a router that is nearly 3 inches away from my laptop.

Although I have had problems with my router in the past is that a possibility of the solution to the problem?

Well, port forwarding, at least on my Linksys routers, are done through the router's software.

Although, port forwarding shouldn't render your computer's connection useless on the servers or ventrilo. It should just slow down the process some, but not completely sever the connection.

I'm suspecting that it's a firewall of some sort blocking it.

Also, you said you made a few downloads, but nothing huge... what were those downloads? I mean, they could be the reason....

Last, but not least, simple web surfing can lead to a spyware downloading itself to your computer without you knowing, and some will limit your computer's performance, so if I were you, I'd go and download a copy of Spybot Search & Destroy, as it's pretty dang good at catching spywares.

Can you provide a link to the spyware search and destroy? I have never used it or even heard it of it. Plus if it were the firewall wouldn't it block the program entirely? Not just a few servers.

I thought that any download is needed with your premission.

Recently the only thing that comes to mind is TF2 which is a pretty safe download coming from steam. That is all that I can think of that has happened.

Thanks and when you can provide the link I will check it out :)

Blue...

Seriously, if you typed in "spybot search & destroy" into Google, just like that, the first link would have been the correct one, which is The home of Spybot-S&D!

Honestly understeer Spyware S&D has fallen off the list of good spyware removal programs for some time now... the problem is the developer no longer keeps up with today's worst spy progs, so where it might help with spyware from about a year ago it's going to be virtually useless against any of the new variations of smitfraud, vundo, or other ones that are out now. It sounds to me that this is not a spyware issue, otherwise he wouldn't be able to connect to ANY servers. My guess is it's a firewall problem with norton. Blue, you should try disabling your windows and norton firewalls and see if you are then able to connect. My guess is that at some point Steam requested permission to access the internet and you disallowed it through Norton accidentally.

Well, Spyware S&D is free, and I've been using it and not have any problems with it, so I've just stuck with it.

Any recommendations for better ones that are also free?

In terms of antivirus Avast! (free) is the best available as far as I'm concerned. We did extensive tests on several popular AVs and it's really top of the line with a boot time scan. on campus our school provides McAfee Enterprise, and while the av portion is pretty crappy, the Antispyware module is terrific (not free unfortunately, but read on). For spyware a combination of Hijackthis, IceSword, Autoruns and Process Explorer is excellent. The most popular spyware around currently is Zlob variations of smitfraud, vundo, and winfixer. All of which have specific fixes available on the net. But yeah, HjT, IceSword, Autoruns, and Process Explorer are teh sex when it comes to killing Spyware. (All free)

Ironically, I haven't used an Anti-Virus program in over 2 years.
A few spyware here and there, but nothing bad happened :amen:
