Skins to look out for
Posted: Apr 18, 2011, 23:46:43
Okay, lets be straight forward here, there are some skins that come with hacks, a lot of you know this, but for those who dont know, skins like these come with a certain hack, for example say i found an awp skin that had a crosshair even when you werent aiming through the scope, that is a hacked skin and will most likely get you VAC banned. Another example is with an m4a1, Okay so lets say i found an m4 skin with a working grenade launcher, the hand thrown grenade was merged to the rifle category, therefore putting a grenade launcher making it faster to throw (or in the skins case ''shoot'') the grenade, that is also considered a hack as it doesnt give others a chance to run away. Last example say i took an mp5 with a scope (scopes on a skin are fine just as long as you cant aim through them) and you could be able to aim down the sights, your shots will be 80% more accurate than it would normally be if you didnt have an aimable scope. If you are a counter strike source addict and just love playing it, downloading those skins could get you banned from all the VAC secured servers, and ALL of the servers on counter strike source are VAC secured, so please dont do it.

EDIT: I have deleted the links to the hacked skins because of trafficing, im sorry about that.

Could we... not link to the files, please?
I appreciate the heads up, but you're only giving the "hacked" files more traffic...

Thank you.
It's really no problem, it's just not really necessary to post links to the offending files, especially on a public forum such as this one (where anyone can see and anyone can click through to see the target page).
The post is alright, though. It's very important that individuals who are modding their game be cautious about the contents of the skin files they are downloading; sometimes the author will slip something in there that VAC or our own anti-cheat plugin won't like. I know that I used to skin all my guns, but it's better to be safe than sorry and, well, the guns are pretty enough as is, I think. :D
Thanks for the quick response. :)

Most skins are fine but you always need to take a bit of care when downloading them in case there are any unwanted extras included. A skin is simply a different graphic from whatever item, anything that changes the behaviour of the gun or game, like zoom on a weapon that doesn't normally have it, requires changes to the game, in other words a hack. For such a minimal advantage such as zoom on an MP5 it just isn't worth risking a VAC ban.
The laser sight on a sniper won't get you banned, it doesn't effect the game it just makes no scoping a bit easier in the same way that having a mark in the center of your monitor would.
It's not really possible to block skins like those without banning everyone's gun skins. We do use the whitelist that blocks none standard textures for things like wall or box textures to make sure no one is being naughty and using transparent textures.

I understand, but i have seen some skins that have been removed and got over 20 people vac banned last week i know the laser sight and the ironsight things arent that bad enough for a vac ban, but things like a working grenade launcher on an m4a1 and a no recoil glock or something like that.

Spotting anyone using these type of skins would be very difficult for a few reasons, unless they change the in game behaviour of the guns in an obvious way.
Someone with a laser sight would be better at no scoping, but so would someone who has practiced a lot, has a mark in the center of their screen or is just having a lucky day. If the grenade launcher skin actually changes the mechanics of how a grenade is thrown then that would be noticable in game, but if it's just a different animation of a normal grenade throw it would just look normal.
A "skin" like the no recoil glock mentioned above sounds like it should be easy to spot in game but it depends on how it works and how pronounced the effect it. If it uses an "anti-recoil" effect, which moves the xhair downwards after firing rather than up then that's easy to spot. If it just makes it appear to the player that there is no recoil but doesn't effect the actual gun behaviour then it would just look normal. If it cancels out the recoil entirely then even that can be hard to spot depending on how the player uses the gun and the relative strength of the recoil on that particular gun, and there are some oddities with CSS so sometimes it can appear that someone, or everyone, has no recoil when in fact they do. Which was highlighted in this recent ban appeal:

Scroll down to my first post for an explanation of why it was weird.

If you wanna be safe about downloading Skins, FPSBanana.com (It has a new name now) Has a VERY strict policy about their Skins. If the skins comes with .dll, .exe or anythign other than reconized game file they are automatically Pruned from being displayed on the website.
