pffftttt, halo is nothing compared to traditional FPS. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Half Life 2 hands down, I'd say none ever topped the HL2 except the HL2 episode 1 & 2. Any other game form COD4 to Crysis to GOW to Halo to Mass Effect ....... they all are fun to play, mess around with and good for change but you will always play HL2 and it's expansion extensions and mods...

Out of those two, i prefer Halo 3.

The best FPS for me has to be crysis, although it was kinda short, i thought the gameplay was awesome, the different ways you can play it. Its not the best game ive played, but for gameplay, its ownage

I wouldnt say there is an 'ultimate' shooter as so many different shooter games are about totally different aspects.

For example, HL2 and its succeeding episodes were the turn in a major step of FPS gaming. For me that point in gaming history is probably still the best. Things such as gameplay and physics must be taken into account, which is where games such as Crysis, Call of Duty and Half-Life take precedence over other lesser known titles.

Graphics play a huge role in modern gaming, the higher the better, for some. However, if too high the majority of people may not be able to run the said game(s). The most recent example would probably be Crysis, in which the Graphics engine was stunning to the point of extreme pleasure for some ^^.

In the end, Graphics and Gameplay arent what make a game unfortunately. Probably the most important factor in shooter games (particularly multiplayer games) is the ability to keep you playing for long periods of time. This is where games series like Battlefield and CounterStrike take the gold because steady gameplay + decent enough graphics + online multiplayer = endless hours of fun.

Current best shooter for Graphics = Crysis. (MGS4 looks the best for PS3).
Current best shooter for Gameplay (including physics) = Half-Life 2/Battlefield: Bad Company.
Best shooter for all-around amusement = CounterStrike: Source.

The "ultimate" shooter has to be the original Castle wolfenstein

Without it, the genre we now love to call FPS might never have evolved.

Let's face it how many of you guy's haven't played Doom?

Currently I still reckon COD4 is way ahead of the rest for graphical looks and still maintain gameplay.

But CSS wins for me. Even though I "dabble" in COD4 and BF2 and suchlike I still end up back at Source....

Thumbs up

A real fun FPS back in the days was GoldenEye 64, then CS 1.6 and so forth and as for the ultimate FPS...hmmm, for me, the CoD series...I love those games.

ill agree that while all of those games are good, with personal experience i would say that Battlefield Bad company stomps any of them. it even has an edge on COD 4 as far as gameplay is concerned.

Like many have already said, each game puts its own spin or ideas towards the FPS genre.

My personal favorite FPS is UT2004. Mainly becuz its not like CS, COD, Crysis, Doom, Fear, Quake, or any other FPS. You can do more in that game than any other. Flip off walls, dbl jumps, jump tricks, mid air kills.... I honestly think that alot more people would enjoy the game if so many people werent fixated on standing in one place and firing every 10 minutes.

I could go on but like i said each game lends its hand in developing the genre. Crysis, Far Cry, Doom, COD4, UT3, TF2 etc....
