I just realized that there is another photography thread down below this one in the main list. Oh well... In any case, you're welcome to share your stuff again, and maybe your new stuff, Shift and the others that posted in the other one.

A few of you are aware that I'm an avid photographer, between my intense coding sessions and my intense procrastination sessions, I find myself wondering aimlessly through city streets and park pathways looking for that perfect shot. Of course, I've yet to find it, but I'm getting there. Over the last year or so, I've been continuously compiling what I think are my best shots. From Calgary to Mexico to the lovely Victoria, I find that photography allows me to capture the moment so that I may, one day, remember what it was like to be there and then.

Without further adieu, I give you the master album (not really, but it's a WiP).

Edit: so it turns out I have a Flickr Photostream, as well (who knew?) some picture are going to be duplicated - most of the pictures in my Photostream are from before I started organizing and my trip from Mexico.

I'm going to add descriptions of them here as I see fit.

Image number five is of my dog, Annie. She's 13 or 14 years old, incredibly over weight, and one of the most adorable dogs I've ever laid eyes on. She doesn't show it, but she's very smart: you can say to her, "Where's mommy?" or "Go find (person's name)" and she'll go over to that person. Of course, she doesn't like doing that any more because her hips are going and it hurts to get up. I haven't seen her in a while since going away to College... :(

Number eight and nine were taken in Canada's beautiful Kananaskis country. My Mom's company owns cabins by a powerstation there (they used to be used for maintence who were working on the hydro-plant in the area) and employees and alumni can rent them out for a few weeks. It was a beautiful night, very cold and I had my camera out by the fire. I opened the shutter for 30 seconds and came up with these.

Number 20 is of the BC Parliament building. It is, without a doubt, one of the most stunning protraits of architecture in Canada. It's in an old style, I think it was built around the turn of the century (1900, or so), and looks down on Victoria's inner-harbour (also incredibly gorgeous). Year round, they leave up these Christmas light on the building which highlight the various ins and outs of the structure (if that makes any sense)... Picture number 21 is in the courtyard of the parliament building.

Holy crap I forgot your aptitude for photography, thats some seriously good stuff. Have you considered doing photography or even journalism as a career? I've got to start one of those imgur albums, they seem a lot less complicated than flikr or photobucket. Maybe this weekend I'll have some time. My favorites are the skyskapes/landskapes. There are definitley times when it is impossible to capture the magnitude of a setting, but when you can the photo is really something worth looking at. Number 17 being a perfect example.

I haven't been photographing much lately, in fact the last time I had the Canon out was 2 months ago on my trip out to LA. Here the only photo I like so far, from Ocean Ave right by the Santa Monica Pier. Kina a weird photo I dont know iof its the traffic, the plane or the people...

Although I typically find myself drawn to landscapes, sunsets, and nature, I can never fully escapse the lure of the concrete jungle. I love documenting our progress as humans in our constant fight against nature's predominant force: gravity. I love architecture, I love feeling so incredibly small standing next to gargantuan man-made structures. It's a little hard to capture skyscrapers effectively, in my opinion, but I try my best...

My current city is a little lacking in that area, but it's more than made up in terms of nature's beauty - but it's still something I miss. My hometown, Calgary, is noted for a number of structures including The Bow (seen in four, five, six, and seven), the Calgary Tower (seen in one and nine), and the Banker's Hall complex (seen in two eight). While I love nature, as I stated earlier, I do miss the city life.

I love long exposures, and what you've posted is a great example of one. So much movement and action. I tend to go a little more abstract route with exposures like that. (it seems imgur isn't taking some of my photos... but I have a lot like that, some of them are pretty neat)

And two more little sets: this is from a trip to Vancouver a while back. Right along the water is Granville Island, it's a notable market and has some history, apparently, I just focussed on the concrete things and didn't really pay attention to the history :( And this one is on the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver about a week ago...

Unforunately, photography, for me, is just a hobby. I'm currently in school for a Computer Science/Economics double major; no journalism/photo-journalism.

It's also worth noting that there are no good *free* hosts for high-definition photos on the internet. I like imgur, it's easy and fast, but it compresses my photos and makes them looks cheap. :(

good photos

Don't get discouraged about where you live.
It's very awarding when you find beauties in places where you don't think there are any.
Wherever you are, if you look hard enough, close enough, you can find something interesting.

Also remember that, just because it's something 'beautiful' it doesn't make it shutter worthy.

:)

keep shooting

Tulls, what kind of camera do you have? Photography for me is a hobby too, I'm majoring in Marketing and probably sports management along with it. Just curious as to what gear you have.

Dan, I use a Rebel XSi with either the standard 18-55 f3.5 kit lens or the massive 70 - 200 f4.6 telephoto lens.

It's a nice camera, but given the opportunity, I'm going to spring for either a 5D or a 7D (both cameras are ridiculously expensive, so I might have to forgo eating for a while ^.^)

I might add that I believe in postwork... Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5 handle that quite well.

I know a lot of photographers will tell you that it's all about what lens you have, but I disagree. It's about having the eye to see things that others can't. Good luck and have fun!
