It's free, Not as great as Photoshop, But still very good for a free open source program.

I use both photoshop and Gimp, but i think Gimp is much easier for a beginner and much quicker, photoshop is very slow and can take hours to do very simple things, you could always download a trial version of photoshop first and use tutorials to help you, step-by-step.

I learned making sprays with Fireworks 8. It was Macromedia back then, but
Adobe bought the rights and used them to improve Photoshop and Illustrator.

I'm sure you can't buy it anymore, but there's still some copies out there you
can download for free (30 day trial). As I said: simple, and easy to learn the
first steps in order to use Photoshop in a later stage...
