The Bait

[:@]<-- This is how I feel when playing GunGamewhen a map switch occurs andeveryone seems to have voted for a very large map thatdoesn't necessarily (sp) fit wellinto the whole GunGame experience. When the server can only hold 20 users and most of the time the server only has about 13-16 users. It just seems quite annoying to have to run around a incredibly large stage trying to kill the last person who just most likely happens to be on the opposite side running in circles. A few maps of certain annoyances are ones such as the HamesterHole map. This entire map CT sided. They have a quick way to the roof and their spawn is on a floor above T spawn with theonly way Ts can get up to higher ground is to climb ladders going up.. unfortunately when they get to the top CTs are already waiting at every ladder or even camping on the roof waiting to slaughter the Ts.
This is not the only large map on the GunGame Server. I'm sure some people here know of quite a few that don't really play well with the entire GunGame playing feel. IMHO I believe the GunGame maps should be about the size of Texture City (Adv). That way games are quick and fun, not tedious and boring. I'm sure many other of you fellow GunGame lovers can agree that when you have to spend three minutes looking for the last person to kill it gets boring. Plus when people have mics and are voicing to just meet in one place constantly that gets annoying aswell. I love seeing new maps on the GunGame server but I don't love seeing gigantic maps that really don't fit into the GunGame experience.. Also maps that are very symetrical on both spawns. They don't have to be the same layout but atleast the advantages are pretty much level. A great example is the Texture City (Adv) map. Both Spawns have very quick ways to get to the roofs, both have windows and they're both very similar in the "fairness". POST YOUR THOUGHTS!

i agree. it's especially annoying when there are say about 6-10 people on and everyone votes for a large map and everyone rushes one side and it ends up the other team rushes the opposite and they go in circles or you go one way and everyone else goes another and everyone is dead before you see one person. it gets rather boring rather quickly.

just a quick note about hamster hole...the Ts do have a couple of spawn points upstairs inside the building. If they rush out the door as soon as the round starts they can usually be waiting at the top of the outside stairs before the CTs can get up there. There is also a set of stairs outside on the T spawn side of the map that goes up to the upper level of the building that you can jump up to the roof from.
someone last night accused me of speed hacking when I was T because I got the upstairs spawn point right by the door so I charged out and jumped down into CT spawn as soon as the round started ![]() |

It's true that bigger maps tend to take longer to play. But I think a good mix of large, mid sized and small maps are essential if you want to attract a diverse crowd of players. Most people that choose a large map when the vote comes up either don't know any of the maps or they really like playing them. Imho there should be a nice mix to serve all kinds of players, styles of play. And if people really start camping...hey that's why you have admins around. About searching three minutes for the last person... I don't really mind, since I will probably want to stab him. I like chasing people. ![]() The spawnpoints on the 1st floor are brilliant. Nothing better than storming out with a tmp shooting everyone coming up the stairs. ![]()

Lets not forget that many players just automaticlly press 1 or so without reading the map names. And coincidently the 1st map is a large map. ![]() I am part of this group, many times I just choose 1 so I can hurry up and get my screen cleared of the selection. lol.

I think it depends on the map... a really large map with high scouting areas for sniping is not so bad,
a huge map all enclosed with many different hallways and rooms is not so fun...

I feel the same way about really small maps when the server is full, far too cramped.
It would be nice if when the vote came up it could somehow pick maps that suit the number of players on the servers, under 8 small maps, 9-14 medium, 15-20 bigger maps. I don't think it's possible to do that though. It does bug me when players vote for a rubbish or too big map and then leave the server, leaving the people who didn't vote for it stuck with it[:'(].

I think it depends on the map. some of the larger maps are a lot of fun, while others manage to be a bad combination of too big and too many ways to go. I like hamster hole because even though it is fairly large, there are a limited number of ways to go that aren't out in the open so you usually don't end up with people not able to find each other. Warehouse on the other hand (which I played for the first time tonight) is really oversized and has way too many ways to go and places to hide.
my vote is to get rid of warehouse and the new air assault (pretty sure that's what it's called) maps. the air one is just horrible. people are constantly falling off of it and there is no way to get back up. |
