Default Engine Error

After i get on css and get into a server and then it shows me what team to pick, i pick one and then my screen goes blank and then i get a pop-up on my desktop saying that weve have an engine error. and then it we get another pop-up saying that "hl2.exe" has had an error and needs to close, even thogugh we wernt even playing HL2.

Can you guys help and try to figure out the problem? The only thing that i could think that might have cused it is that i was deleating out a gun skin and i deleted the files. So mabey i could have deleated an important file?

An Engine error? If you get those, that means that your game is pretty heavily modded. You are probably going to have to remove your Program files\Steam\steamapps\[username]\ and then try moving the folder to the desktop and see how the game runs without the mod folder. If it doesn't at all, then delete the folder then delete CSS. If you know what mod you installed when the game started doing that, remove the skin/mod. If not, delete the css mod folder then the game. Do a clean install and all should be well.

That hl2.exe thing is just what Steam calls any game using the half-life 2 engine. I get that a few times when i click of my main screen during loading, and then when i try to re-open the CSS window, my computer has a paddy and comes up with that. God knows why, but after ive joined, i never get anything like that.

If all else fails, just uninstall and reinstall. Or back it up first, saves you having to download it all again.

i had this problem ages ago and i just couldn't fix it no matter what and it eventually escalated into much worse and i couldnt even play the game. i had tried deleting my c-strike folder and uninstalling CS:S and to no prevail.

So i just wiped the computer (had needed doing anyway so much junk slowing the thing up). And ever since i have had no problem. apart from my "could not connect to VAC something"

So my suggestion would be to delete the C-strike folder, then uninstall CSS then reinstall if it still dosnt work just uninstall Steam and reinstall that should solve it.

I deleated some of the maps i downloaded while ingame ( i have over 150 maps ) and then it started to work in some of the servers, but i still can get into my favorite server.

If all else fails, ill have to reinstall.

BTW: Can i copy my Cstrike folder into a USB Drive to back it up.

Yes you can copy your cstrike folder onto a usb but if you were to do that, then if the problem is in your cstrike folder then you would not get rid of that problem as you would just put it back.

if you need to save your binds then make a notepad document and write all your binds as you would in the console then save it in your cfg folder in your cstrike folder under the name "autoexec.cfg" as someone told me on the forums and just copy that to your USB then put it back once you have deleted what you need.

But as the problem may be anywhere you dont really want to be copying much out of your Cstrike folder as it may be in any of those files. Only copy the ones you need and can't get back. not that there are many you cant get back.

Hope this helps you.

Try deleting clientregistry.blob in your Steam folder.

Its like Turn it off and on again for steam.

If you right click CS:S in steam window and click deletel local content it deletes the .gcf files, but not your cstrike folder. Honestly it's very unlikely anything in your cstrike folder is causing this. Definitely no way a map is. Also can't hurt to verify integrity and defrag with steam.
