All,
Last night on the Evolution server, had about 27 players on playing dust and dust 2. A player, y@music,with a higher ping of about 120-130 was doing extremely well. A couple of players thought y@music was hacking and I spected him and didn't see anything "unusual". A player was constantly bombarding me asking me to kick the player with the high ping because he was dragging the server down. The player mentioned that I as admin didn't understand lag and y@music was lagging "fast". Okay, I can understand that players with high ping can be difficult to kill because of character skipping around but I didn't see that consistantly. Once, i saw y@music turn corner and opposing player not shoot at him and would get killed by y@music. I didn't kick y@music because I didn't see any evidence of hacking; although, his ping rate was high i didn't think that was sufficient for a kick. Using Extr3m3 as an example, he has a higher than normal ping rate on the Evolution server but is able to do very well since he is located in Washington state (his broadband connections is like 5MB . . . envious!)and the Evolution server is located in NY. So, the question is . . . can player lag "fast"? OPREP <-------Noob! |

While I don't understand what you mean by "lag fast", I can tell you the myth that a high ping player can drag down the server is crap. If a high ping player can drag down your server, it's time to close up shop.
Second, 120-130 ping is not that high. All these competitive players have gotten in their mind that anything over 30 is "OMGWTFBBQ" high. It's not. Also, a 120-130 ping player should not skip around on the screen. If they do, they likely need to adjust their rates. Also, some people just play better with higher ping - I know I do. :\ |

Chicky is right, despite what players will try to tell you, a player (or "client" to be technical) cannot lag a server.
As to his lag helping him....it's certainly possible. If the lag is just an issue of being far from the server of having a weak connection, it is hader for both himself to get kills and the people shooting at him. If it is an issue with his rates, then it may actually be easier for him to get kills because his opponents are not choppy but he is and vice-versa. Use "ma_rates" to look at the players rates within a server. The command will usually put an asterix next to players who have bad rates.

I've never heard of someone lag "fast" and that's why I posted the question. Again, I understand if someone is lagging badly and the difficulty of killing a laggy player but this wasn't the case. I didn't see him lag all that bad if any. A couple of times, as I spected y@music, the screen would freeze for about 1-2 seconds . . . and that was over an hour's worth of play.
I didn't check the ma_rates because of high number of players and several had really good scores. Some playerscomplained of hacking but again . . . I didn't see any evidence. At least for y@music, his 120-130 ping rate was not laggy in my opinion. I just wanted a sanity check on this that's all. Thanks. Oh, by the way, it's pretty interesting to see the server with 27 players playing dust. Brutal . . . just plain brutal!!! OPREP |
