Default Upgrading Advice

Alright, after talking to about six different dell employees, none of which could speak english well enough to save their lives, i found out that my laptop can have the motherboard and graphics cards upgraded. I do not know a lot about those kinds of things, so " UNCLE GHOST NEEDS YOU!" not to enlist in the military but to let me know what the best mobo's and graphics cards are for laptops and where to get them. Also, can I just bring those things into circuit city to get them installed or should i talk to someone with more than just a high school diploma?

Please inclde as much info about the company as well as the product aspossible, hopefully upgrading these things will let me play hassle-free.

Generally a Laptop will be much harder andmore expensive to upgrade than a normal PC...for a couple reasons

[ol][*]Motherboards are specific to a brand or series of laptops (You won't find a DFI Lanparty for a Compaq Persario laptop for example)[*]Most laptops are designed to be almost impossible to open without some damage (Stripped screws, pry marks, scratches), so if you want it to stay pretty, you will need to send it in to a professional ($$$)[*]The Video card is onboard in almos t all laptops. New video card means new motherboard. [/ol]
I looked for a replacment motherboard for one of my laptops a while back. HP Pavillion ze5575sr. At that time the motherboard new from Manufacturer was over 400 dollars..

Laptops are made to be disposable. Nothing canreally be upgraded easily except the RAM, hard drive, and somtimes the optical Device (CD-ROM).
Of course everything I have said all depends on the brand of laptop you use..
I would say that the total cost to upgrade your laptop as is right now will be about the same as it would cost to build a full PC of the same specs as the laptop has now.

Arbalest what kind of laptop do you have? I have not seen any laptops with seperate Video Cards since the old Inspirons (Pentium 2)

I crack opened laptops all the time and install new motherboards and parts.

I would with HP's right now - most of them have about 80 different screws to take out, and you literally have to take apart the entire unit, including CPU, fans, cdrom, etc.

The parts are expensive too, an OEM mobo without warranty can run you up to $500, a screen, up to $1500.

Lol...no this ones fine except a microscopic scratch that is almost invisable on the top left of the screen.

That brings back a fun destrucytion memory though...I got a stack of Dell CPI's once, all broken...11 of them...so I went ahead and tried to get some working...

I ended up with 2 dead LCD's and 5 working CPI's...

Me and skinny decided to go target practice with my pellet gun, and later have a throwing contest with a Sledge-Axe. That was a fun night...

OK, time out..

As a Dell certified tech, what they told you could be complete BS. Give me the service tag on the bottom of your machine and i'll tell you if it's upgradeable and what you can upgrade it to. That should head off any complete and utter failures you could possibly bring on yourself.

Tubby.

YAY A DELL TECH THAT SPEAKS ENGLISH!!!!!

Inspiron 6000
Service Tag: 37PTJ1

If you can give me any information it would be "much obliged". I really don't want to get a computer made just for gaming because i don't really have the money and i don't have the room at all, my laptop is on an old school desk from the 1950's

As far as I know you have to send in your laptop to have it upgraded which means you're going to get ripped off, but that's really your only opportunity unless you wan't to open up your laptop[&:].
