I have used the same cheap 7 dollar logitech mic for my gaming and have never had problems with it in or out of game. I usean audigySE sound card and have all the drivers up to date but it seems like ever since steam put the new voice system in the game I have had nothing but problems in game with my mic sounding like a loud static like sound. However I randomly get the same problem out of game in vent as well.
Should I go with a usb mic instead because I personally dont want to lose the 5.1 surround during game. I dont care too much for using a headset. Any ideas what would cause the static in game if I never changed any settings for the mic or sound card. Ty. |

feel free to blame Steam for this one. The update to the voice communication is causing certain soundcards and onboard chipsets to run into problems if you have a program that uses your mic (such as Vent) running when you start the game. A work around that may work for you is to start the game first, connect to a server, then minimize the game and start Vent. Unfortunately, this is a hit-or-miss fix. Your in-game voice should work fine if you do it this way, but your Vent may end up being all static filled when you speak. I ran into the same problem on my system and sometimes the work-around would work fine while other times people in Vent would be begging me not to talk because it just blasted static. I bought a USB headset (which offloads the sound processing so that the soundcard is taken out of the equation) and haven't had a problem since.

thanks. I guess in the end I might have no choice but to go with a headset then unless they make usb mic only. Do you know if I have to disconnect from vent whenever a new map loads? I ask because during the times that my mic does work in game it will go crappy right after the map change. At least the good thing is that I wasnt the only one affected by this update. Everyone kept telling me that I just had a crappy sound card or mic and I told them my card is good and my mic was fine.

I know Logitech makes a USB mic. newegg.com has it for $20 plus shipping [link=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836111601]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836111601[/link]
If you're in a hurry and don't mind paying a couple bucks more, I've seen the same one at Best Buy for $30. the mic crapping out on map change is annoying. Mine did it about half the time before I got the USB headset. |
