Wow, thanks Fallen1 that's one comprehensive answer, thanks for taking the time.
Think I'll go for building a new one. Donate/sell my old one to my brother. I know a guy who can get all the bits at trade prices and put it together. Spent the day browsing and comparing prices based on the info you gave me. Just trying to decide between 6600 cards, to GT or not to GT and AMD 3200 or 3700. I'm fairly new to upgrading so I may have some noob questions later on. Thanks again CP |

No problem at all.
![]() If you're having trouble deciding between video cards, ExtremeTech.com just released their latest graphics card comparison yesterday. You can find it at [link=http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1945652,00.asp]http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1945652,00.asp[/link]. Tom's Hardware also has a couple of good reviews that might help you, including these two[link=http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/05/squeezing_value_out_of_lower_end_cards/] http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/...wer_end_cards/[/link] and [link=http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/09/seven_of_nvidia/]http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/09/seven_of_nvidia/[/link] Personally, I think the 7600 cards look like a great deal, and I think you'd end up being happier with one of those than you would be with an older 6600 series card. As for the CPU, the 3700+ has twice as much L2 cache as the 3200+, which would give a nice boost to overall system performance and especially in intensive apps like games. However, both are very capable CPUs so it's up to you if the $50 (retail) price difference is worth it to you for the extra L2 cache. |

whats wrong with that statement?
"You have a Pentium 3 2400 at 2GHz, with Service Pack 2?! " is this unusual or something? i have had this computer for about 4 years now or so and i am ready for it to go down the road. its slow, outdated, backed up, half speed piece of compaq!! lol its done its job well but with only having 4X agp it being held back. so fallen will the new proccessor fit right into my board? will that make it 8x agp? |

You likely have a AMD Athlon 2400+ at 2.0GHz, which makes more sence . Not a bad CPU either I've had one...blew it up though

damnit Hitman, haven't you learned yet? I need details man!
if you're switching to an A-Open motherboard, what model is it? If you're keeping the motherboard you have now, I'd need to know what processor you want to put in it before I can tell you if it is compatible or not. As far as the 4X AGP slot on your current motherboard, it's always going to be 4X. doesn't matter what processor you put in it, the AGP slot itself can't transfer at 8X speeds, so if you want to go to 8X you'll need a new board (I'm guessing that's where the A-Open board comes in?) oh, and that horrendous screetching noise coming from your computer the other night when you called me? Yup, that was definately an alarm to let you know the 6800 you put in was trying to pull way more power than your 200W power supply could feed it. |

LOL holy smoke Fallen, even I feel admonished after that lol. I thinkI actually saw your finger shaking in the air. LMAO! I smoked my last vid card cuz Dell lied to me and told me I had a 300W power supply. When I was at the computer store buying a new power supply for my 7800GTOC (2 cards in the future), on a whim, I had them check the output on my old one. 175W!!! Jerks...no wonder the card blew...also too late to do anything about it. Do they make cards that want less than a 300w anymore? I put a 480w thermaltake in because I don't think you can have too much power. *does the Tim Allen ah,ah,ah,AH!* Anyway Hitman, power supplies are cheap, and are very important. (as I'm sure that Fallen will or already has told you)
