Default latency problem: resolution?

Sexy Fred had a post not too long ago asking for support for some latency spikes he was having. I can't seem to find the post again (my observation skills aren't top notch), so I'm replying here.

Fred: Like I said in that post, I was having the same problem. I tried a live chat session with some of my ISP's techies, game them the information about the issue, and they came to the conclusion that too much signal was being allowed into my modem. They dispatched a technician, he came and did his thing, and my latency is finally and beautifully low again. Try contacting your ISP and ask if this could be your problem as well. Shouldn't cost you anything. It didn't me, anyway.

I'm afraid that I wasn't here at the time, so I don't have a clue. My parents can't take pictures on their phones without my help, so I'd be better off asking my dog. They do recall, however, that he did whatever it was he did outside on the main cable pole. I'm not familiar with wiring of that sorts, so I can't help you any more than that, Fugazi.

Also, my router's been in a box for about two months now; it wasn't the problem.

is it dsl or cable ?

i know with the cable system if you have a signal amplifier boosting signal past the modem's operating parameters is the same as not having enough signal ...

So.... what ports do CS use?

Is it 27015? Or is that only for where the server is at?

Is there a way to find out what ports are used for CS so I can actually set up the port forwarding?

I've the same problem at the moment

And it's taken the noobs nearly 2 weeks to fix it so far and my latency and ping are still mentally high.

They get until friday then i'm gonna send my "doomsday virus" to virgin.net and kill the lot of them LMAO.

It would seem that with the newest Steam update that they have fixed the issue of high ping for some users. My ping is finally back down to below 100ms on 174.5. Before it would always be below 100ms, then it spiked over 100ms for over a month, and now it's finally back down.

I'd still love to know how to port forward my signals and such through my router though...

Does your ISP offer a live internet chat? I'd say that they would be able to help you, if it's something a customer can do his or her self.

aww crap[:'(] I changed the password to my router one night and I forgot it. Damn. I had a ton of ports fwded etc, including CSS. I dont feel like resetting the router now to find the answer to the magic port number question.

At any rate what you guys are refering to is called the "network backbone structure." This network is maintained by your ISP and the better updated the network...well the better your ping times.

Here is my data.

I have a Linksys WRT54G. I usually play wirelessly, but I've also noticed that even when I'm plugged directly into the router, which is plugged into the modem, which is plugged into the wall, that it didn't make any difference in the latency or ping.

I have a feeling it's partly due to my laptop's processor and memory more than the actual latency or ping...

I am with Bellsouth btw, DSL.
