My latency is usally in the 60s or 70s. But every now and then, it shoots up into the 200s and 300s. This didn't used to be a problem, becuase it didn't really happen that much. Lately, though, it's been occurring more and more often. Also, when it does happen, the times of the lag spikes seem to be pretty consistant. Whenever I notice that it has shot up, I exit CSS, and then check for any other application that could be causing it. I never find one. I have cable internet, so I don't think my ISP could be the problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

Like Tony said probably some kind of spyware. Time for some virus / spyware scans. If you want some tips on which programs to use or the problem persists after your comp is "clean" then let us know.

what programs do you have that auto-update? There are a few that have either recently added this feature and/or have been pumping out updates like crazy lately. McAfee upding itself will slaughter your ping, so will the new auto-updater that bundled with iTunes 7, auto-updates to anti spyware, Adobe auto update, Microsoft updates, and any of those programs checking for updates even if there aren't any available (especially if a couple of them decide to check for updates at the same time).
also, what other programs do you have running when you are playing CS? even stuff that supposedly sits in the taskbar doing nothing but wait for you to need them can randomly decide to suck up bandwidth. |
