Ok,

My windows updater wants me to download and install the above...

1) Has anyone else already done so?

2) Did it cause any problems??

Hmmm, I didn't even know SP3 was coming out. Why would MS provide XP SP3 if they want everyone to go Vista?

I will have to check SP3 out for my desktop computer. My laptop is working but it won't install any MS updates.

yep No problem with installing it. It's basically all the previous updates grouped together.

It's all the updates after SP2, but it does not include IE7. All the actual features that were drawn back from Vista, you won't even see. Black hole router detection, NAP, the ability to install without the need to enter a license key during setup.

Nobody will see these in the home user environment, mostly just corporations.

But yes, update.

Yeah I got the update. Didn't notice any difference on my computer after its installation.

This is probably the only time you will ever hear me say this but:

IF IT AINT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!

I would recomend against updating to SP3 on a well-broken in Windows install...if it is a fresh install go for it, but there is always a risk it will f... up your whole system. Happened to me with SP2.

95% chance it would install without a problem, so if you need it enough to justify the risk, go for it.

My laptop has the MS auto updater and is trying to install SP3 I believe. However, it is having problems, I get the notification updates are ready to be install but it hangs up and states unable to install. When I turn off the laptop, the option of installing updates is in the dialog box but I don't think it installs either. I saw it had something like 87 updates to install. Not sure if it is SP 3 related or because I reinstalled XP about a week ago.

I think one of the problem is the Genuine Windows Advantage update. The laptop is unable to install that update first and the rest of the updates are denied. This update thing is dragging my laptop speed down considerably. The update keeps trying to install and hangs up. Catch 22!

I haven't been able to check my desktop yet for the SP 3 update.

Well, I went to the MS website and found out why my updates weren't being installed:

CAUSE
This problem occurs because of how the Windows XP repair operation replaces Windows system files. When you repair a Windows installation by using a Windows XP CD, the repair operation performs both of the following operations:
• It replaces all the Windows system files with the corresponding files from the CD.

Note This includes the Windows Update files.
• It restores the Windows registry.
The latest version of Windows Update includes a file that was not available in the release version of Windows XP. This file is named Wups2.dll. Therefore, after the repair operation is complete, the following situation exists:
• The Wups2.dll file remains on the computer.
• The registry entries that correspond to this file are missing.

So, the laptop is in the process of installing 89 updates. After the installation, I will go ahead with the SP3. Wish me luck!

oh did you actually get windows update fixed, because i coded a script to fix that, we replace so many MB's at work and have to do windows repair so often i made it to save time, let me know if you still get failed installs, oh and sp3 is supposed to come up before those 89, because it IS those 89

Yea,

It's unlike any of the usual updates as it backs up a whole load of files then installs about 90 different files onto the pc before asking you to restart.

Then it takes a while to boot up as the windows updates itself, finishes up and away we go.....

I tried IE, Outlook Express and steam / CSS and all went well before I switched off yesterday.

Haven't tried switching it back on yet LOL

What kind of cool new Windows start up screen did you see?

Cause I didn't see anything "special" on mine... then again, I'm running WinXP Pro, and my splash screen stays on for about 7 seconds, in which time I'm usually making my coffee in the morning, so I never see it lol

I do see a friggin Windows NT style log in screen though, which thoroughly ticked me off, because my Windows acts like NT more than XP. I told you guys about the fact that if I hit ctrl + alt + del it brings up the NT style window that asks me what I'd like to do right? Have to hit ctrl + shift + esc to bring up the task manager directly.
