Question Vista vs XP

Ok this really isn't a Vista vs Pc thread as in debate, but its more of a question. I recently got my hands on a free 100% legal Vista Business product key. I haven't gotten around to install it yet, but I was wondering, What is your opinion on Vista. Personally I don't find it that bad, although there is some doubt in the back of my mind right now on whether I should do it. I mean I might as well, It is FREE. But I guess I would find more comfort in myself if I get some opinions My plan is to dual-boot it with Xp for a little bit, and see which one I like better. Then the winner gets to stay on my HDD. I checked my hardware and it's more than enough to run vista smoothly.

it depends on your computer a lot. What are your specs? depending on your setup it may run slow with all the bells and whistles on, and games are typically a little slower under vista.

Feature wise it's much better, and as an os much more secure. I personally use XP on my main rig for gaming (when it won't run in wine), and then I also use Vista on my laptop. To be perfectly honset, I just disabled all the vista like features and it just looks and acts in many like xp with a different start menu....

But the future is definitely with vista, and DX10 is only on vista.

My specs are: 3.0ghz P4 Presscott (looking to overclock to about 3.4 or 3.5), 2 gigs ram, 240 gb total hdd space, radeon x1650 512mb. I tried that vista upgrade compatibility tool that windows had and it gave me an all systems go. Plus my friend has a similar build and he scored a 5.2 windows experience index rating in vista I'm not going to install it for a while cause, 160 of my 240 gb hdd is actually an external hdd and I want to get a second internal so I have more space. I have no money for that. Does anyone know when the first service pack is supposed to come out?

I've found Vista in my experience to be just as stable as XP. It just doesn't get solid performance.

yeah your computer is probably set, although I'd think twice about overclocking that prescott. They run really hot as is, and you won't see a gain in vista really. SO unless you get wicked good aftermarket I'd leave it stock.
oh and service packs dont really matter. They typically just include all of the updates in one file, and they consider the operating system a different version then. I'd be more worried about updates to your probelms if you have any than service packs.

Ok sounds good. I think I will try it. I used nothing but vista for two months back when I was building the pc I use now and ran into a snag that took me a while to figure out That was about 4 months after vista came out. And it wasn't as annoying as people say it is, and games weren't bad. I just found that the older the game is, the poorer it performs. But thats expected with new operating systems. I just wanted a second opinion because of what I've heard about. Thanks a lot canttouchthis!

yeah no problem. I am a little dissappointed in MS for making you buy vista for halo 2 though. as if saying it wouldn't be for pc so everyone would buy an xbox wasn't enough.... As a result I doubt I'll ever get that game. There's nothing about halo 2 that really needs vista either...

i have a comp with vista and 1 with XP and i personally prefer the XP they both have the same amount of RAM something like 2 gig and i just can't play css on the vista one because it lags so much and i get mega stressed.

Vista is the way to go if you have at least 2 GB of RAM. The operating system is amazing (especially for gaming - DX10).

XP is a good OS, but it is getting to be old technology. XP is recommended for people that have less than 2 GB of RAM.

didnt xp first start off as really unstable then as it progressed it became better and better..

maybe the best thing to do is wait a while before going to vista.. i've heard mixed reviews about it..

my xp runs fine with my games and i have no problems with it..

haha, thats a good article, but seems very biased as it only highlights the things MS shouldn't have said. And Technically, even though the specs are high for vista, the mid-end range of brand computers are starting to creep into whats needed for vista, therefore vista wont get as poor performance. It's only a matter of time before affordable computers come with whats needed to run vista. MS seems to be planning for the future. Which immediately doesn't seem like it's working out too well, But i personally think in the next few years, they will do phenomenal as they have done with XP. Currently, only high end computers can run vista, with all the bells and whistles, smoothly. But take my word, Soon, those 400 dollar computers Dell make, will run vista no problem.

I guess I just wanted a second opinion. It made me feel a bit more comfortable. And as you can see, I am now.

In all honesty, it doesn't matter what MS creates. They're, and looks like they always will be (at least it looks this way now), the only company creating popular operating systems. Simply put, they have no competition. It doesn't matter how good Vista is, because eventually they'll drop XP support and everyone will sell it on their machines regardless.
