So here it is, the statement they issued and simply just said "sorry for giving away millions of credit card details":

10 November 2011
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:
Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.
We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.
We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.
While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.
We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.
We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.
I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thnx for the info. I never go on steam forums but I changed my password for my game steam anyway. They need to start crucifying these hackers upside down by their toes when they catch them....unfortunately, it seems like the hackers are smarter than the authorities. I have access to an octagon ring that I would like to have the hackers in with me....I would like to take a couple of "hacks" at them. *big smile*

Not surprised Steam got targeted, a bit surprised they managed it.

There is nothing from Lulzsec or Anon about this so assume it is a criminal security breach, not just someone showing they can do it.

New passwords all round and if you use the same password on multiple sites, don't and then change them all.

Thanks for the announcement, I have gone about doing what needed to be done and I hope it's not such a pain in the rear for everybody else

moose, did they send an e-mail, or just post that in the forums?

It's not really that important to change your passwords unless your account got compromised - VB (the message board platform they're using) doesn't store users' passwords in plaintext (dur); the hacker would have to have access to both the database AND the decryption function. That being said, I'm all for that reassurance, and I'm sure we all need to change our passwords for one reason or another.

Edt: re-read Moose's post.

hashed and salted passwords

Hash functions are impossible to solve in polynomial time (linear), you might be targetted in the future directly, but your passwords are fine.
