I got up at about 4:30am. I had done some cautionary waterproofing a while ago on the roof and it was raining very hard so I thought it would be a good time to check and see if I had any leaks. I wandered through the house shining a light at my skylights and chimney. The rain sounded really loud so I walked out on the back porch to watch the rain with the flashlight. I heard a load sound and at first I thought it was a low flying jet. We live in the woods so there are no lights. It was pitch black outside and the roar got even louder. Water was pouring over the gutters. I couldn’t see anything but I heard water splashing against the house. That freight train description you so frequently hear came to mind. The wind must have been blowing but I couldn’t tell. It was just a very loud roar (I keep using that word but it’s the only way to describe it). Then just as quickly, it was gone. I could hear the rain on the roof again and the trees blowing in the wind. The other people in the house were fast asleep. Even the dog hadn’t moved. I figured it was one hell of a thunderstorm and went back to bed. What the heck….beats the headlines in Chicago….”High today will be zero degrees”. New York State is under six feet of snow. I’ll take a little rain any day.

When I got up the next morning and put on the TV I discovered three large tornadoes had touched down all around me. About a thousand homes were destroyed or damaged. One of those monster tornadoes had passed directly over my home coming down just a few miles away. “Just a little rain”. HA!

Today I was out and about in my T shirt. I’m a game player and I like to mention the weather to those unfortunate people who complain about the cold. I like to brag. “Oh you’re from Buffalo…Tsk Tsk. The weather in Florida is great. Except of course for the Hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, wildfires etc etc. Never again will I be too cocky about the weather here when I see bad weather someplace else. Mother Nature doesn’t fool around. She can get you anywhere if she thinks your being cute.
