I have a ASRock 775v88+ Motherboard. It has 4 memory slots, meaning two DDR Channels.
Like most motherboards, the DDR Channels are color coded and seperated (2x modules of 2). From here on out I will refer to these slots as
Channel1A Channel2A Channel1B Channel2B If that makes any sense. If not I included a photo, (Board pictured is the same make and model as mine)
The memory I was using: 2x512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200 CAS2.5 in slots
Channel1A and
Channel1B , meaning Dual Channel.
A while ago, one random day for no apparent reason,
Channel1A Channel2A stopped working completely. I was wondering why I was getting 30FPS in Source, so I checked CPU-Z suspecting a dead stick of Ram or underclocked/cooked CPU. It showed 512mb Ram, so I assumed I was right.
I powered off my machine, and took one out (
Channel1B ) and powered on, in an attempt to see which stick cooked (as there was no visable cook-marks on the memory modules themselves) After my computer beeped angrilly at me, I swapped it out with the one I pulled from
Channel1B. I expected it to boot with 512, but again I got an angry beep.
I tried putting onestick in both
Channel1A andChannel2Awith the same result, angry beeps. This is when I realized
Channel1A Channel2A were both faulty. There is no damage whatsoever around either of these memory slots, and they are both as clean as they were when the board was new (Intake-fan filters rock!)
Currently I am using both sticks of 512 in slots
Channel1B Channel2B, meaning I am running in Single Channel mode (Eww). Both memorymodules are working fine, andhave passed Ram-testers without any problems.
My bios version is 1.40. The current version for this motherboard is 1.80. I have not seen anything in the Changelogs from version to version that would relate to my problem, nor have I seen any posts of users with a similar problem, meaning it is not a known issue with this board.
I have never liked messing with the Bios on the motherboard...plus I have no floppy drive currently installed [:@]
My question is, what are the chances that the latestBios will fix my cooked memory slots, knowing there is no physical problem with them?
Thanks for reading
