Visual Artifacts Problem: Found and Fixed
After updating my graphics card driver the other night I started seeing visual artifacts on some maps while playing CS 1.6 The most notable were portions of the screen blacking out on fy_bloodysnow and large black boxes in front of my guns and where my rounds where going while shooting on fy_poolday_ogl The handful of other maps I played on didn't have any problems with visual artifacts.
Being the geek that I am, I realized that the problem was that certain portions of the encoding of specific maps was not playing well with the updated driver. Rather than spend all night checking forums and bug reports I decided to go with the "too-obvious-to-work" attempt at fixing it and switched from OpenGL to D3D rendering to see if that had any effect. Problem fixed. It appears that the nVidia 90 series drivers may expereince rendering issues on certain CS 1.6 maps when the game is set to use OpenGL. The bug does not appear to affect D3D rendering, so switching to D3D will fix the problem for almost anyone who runs into the same problem.
Figured I'd post the problem and fix before anyone else runs into it and goes nuts either trying to figure it out on their own or frantically posting and searching for a fix.
