Not to bash the US but it has a track record of not leading the way.
In this context, the US has not ratified the UN Kyoto Protocol for carbon emissions.
Other environmental initiatives such as the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive which many electrical equipment manufacturers support were issued by the European Union. We are merely following their standard.
The US is also one of the only three countries remaining (and the only first-world country) yet to adopt the metric system (although this is not related to environmentalism).
