Probably because the first thing you did was ask them how to join. That isn't really what would be considered "common courtesy". If someone comes up to you and asks how they can become your "friend", how would you respond. Probably by either ignoring the person or telling him some outrageous requirements to become your "friend". Sorry, that's the best analogy I could think of right away.
