Insurgency Mod Review Spawnpoint Rating 8.7/10

Insurgency mod, the very popular mod for source. A first person shooter that is aimed to be as realistic as possible. Likened to counter-strike source (cs:s), it is a online multiplayer shooter. It differs in its approach to be more realistic than cs:s and is somewhat based on the wars being fought today.
The game has two sides to play on, the U.S. Marines and the Insurgents. When you first join a server you pick a “cell” which is a group to divide the team. Then you pick the “class” you wish to play. U.S. Marines have a vast spread of “classes” leading from rifleman, snipers, grenadiers and support. All have a certain advantage and disadvantage. Insurgents have all the same classes except grenadiers which are replaced by RPG instead. Maps are broken down into crucial sites marked by letters on the screen. The object of the game is to capture, secure and then hold these sites to win the game. When a player dies they must wait until the next deployment of reinforcements. Each “cell” has a squad leader who can call reinforcements when needed, and tell what point to attack next. In an attempt to make the game as realistic as possible there is no crosshair on screen and no radar.
The gameplay is extremely fun, but can get somewhat frustrating when being shot and having no clue where from. There are a good variety of maps, some being a snipers dream map and others a snipers nightmares. Most maps are very evenly sided, leaving it up to the team to do what is needed to win. There are some maps that give major advantages to a particular team due to their design. Unfortunately on these maps, the team with the disadvantage will most certainly find themselves in a 'no win' situation.
The controls are very easy to get used to, if you played any first person shooters on the computer it should only take you about 15 minutes to get used to these. As for new computer players or first person shooters it should only take you about 1 hour or so. You can change all the controls however you want, but the default setup is sufficient for most users. The game play is geared toward tactical teamwork, where as a squad leader you can give your troops offensive or defensive instructions and deploy reinforcements. There is much more to this game than first meets the eye.
The Good
Graphics are pretty good, not great since it is a mod for a game that is somewhat old now, but they are good. The models of guns, the explosions from rocket launchers and grenades are excellent. The map textures are very nice, nothing seems out of place.
The Bad
Where it lost points:
Alright there are a few tiny bugs, but it is updated more than once a month and slowly they are disappearing (It just got out of beta). Some maps are way to heavily sided, but like the bugs the maps are being reworked to even them up a bit.
The Ugly
Navigating your character around the map appears ‘heavy’ and more awkward than some of the smoother FPS titles.
Where to get it:
Oh did I mention it was free? Can’t beat a free game!
