Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest
SpawnPoint Review
The flat, stick figured population of yester-year have now evolved and are once again inhabiting our screens in this eagerly awaited follow up to Darwinia.
Introducing Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest, the new title from Introversion that promises its audience a game that is as popular as its predecessor whilst delivering fresh ideas and originality.
With single and Multi Player options, probably the most exciting feature is the Online Multi-Player Mode. Players take charge of their Mulitwinians and compete against each other for ultimate supremacy by engaging in battles that can only be described as 'all out war'.
With 45 unique maps across six different modes of gameplay there's no growing tired of this game!
The six game modes differ in level of skill. Beginning with the simplicity of Domination and King of the Hill through to more challenging, high skilled levels such as Rocket Riot and Blitzkrieg. Each mode is based on a time limit and players succeed by either scoring the most points or completing the most objectives. Strategy is the most important key, as in all Modes the ultimate goal is dominance and to ensure your Multiwinians keep spawning thus over powering the opposition.
Dominance is achieved by capturing 'spawn areas' which will then randomly deliver your reinforcements. Once spawned, you then command your troops in a number of ways including the appointment of officers to direct your Multiwinians to designated areas on the map. Once on the front lines, they automatically open fire on the enemy. Spawn areas can be recaptured by the enemy, so protecting them is paramount as by far, the best way to win is by sheer numbers!
Crates containing more powerful weapons and armoury are parachuted into the game at random locations. Multiwinians close to the 'crate drop' will automatically surround and begin to open the crate, for greater distances however, troops will need to be commanded quickly in order to get there first.
With the contents being of such importance, players will often have to battle for the prize!
The successful capturing of a crate will enable power-ups such as air and nuclear strikes, gun turrets, troop harvesting, protective shields and the ability to plant destructive 'Dark Forests' in an attempt to wipe out your enemies.
Taking early control of these crates can often end a game before its even started, but all is not lost if you find yourself out of the game before you've managed to blink.
In Multiwinia: Survival of the flattest comes a genius idea that is known as the 'Retribution' feature. Retribution delivers power ups to eliminated players at approximately 30 second intervals until the end of the game. Here you get the chance to inflict damage on the remaining players by destroying their armies of Multiwinians or simply seek revenge by causing as much incapacitation as possible.
The adjustable camera angle allows you to effectively sit up in the heavens playing 'god' to your vast armies of Multiwinians, or zoom right in for a close up view of the ensuing battles. You can also take control on the Gun Turrets for some heavy artillary action.
With each game mode comes a different playing style with new objectives and unique maps.
Single or Multi Player:
| Skill |
Mode | Objective | No. of Maps | |
| * | Domination | Overwhelm the entire map and destroy enemy teams to win | 9 | |
| * | King of the Hill | Occupy & hold the zones around the map. Points are awarded for amount of zones controlled | 9 | |
| ** | Capture the Statue | Capture and move large Statues back to your base to score points | 9 | |
| ** | Assault | Attack a heavily defended position and capture a WMD before it detonates and kills everybody | 8 | |
| *** | Rocket Riot | Capture solar panel arrays to refuel your rocket. Defend your rocket as you prepare to launch. First to launch wins | 7 | |
| *** | Blitzkrieg | Capture and then defend crucial Flag Points around the map | 7 |
Overall connection to the servers is good when playing Multi Player Mode. You may experience a few connection losses and being disconnected from the server during any battle can be frustrating but more so if you're winning. Some brief lag issues may be experienced also but at a level that is common with Online GamePlay.
Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest is a fresh, fast paced, offensive strategy game that delivers an exhilarating multi player experience. The games menu handling is clear and concise, a refreshing change from getting lost in a maze of menu options before finally discovering how and where to get to the start of the game. For new players, it takes no time understanding the concept and how to control your Multiwinians. The tutorial is also very helpful with clear instructions given on the screen. In single player mode you can enjoy the experience of learning to command vast armies of multiwinians to perfection and in multi player you can then choose to host or join a game online with other players.
Playing alone or with friends, Multiwinia ranges from 2-4 players in either single or multi player mode.
With its stunning graphics and awesome game sounds, altogether Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest offers a uniquely addictive, refreshing and affordable style of gameplay that would appeal to all ages.
